only blew oil at higher revs, i think not returning to the sump properly and getting sucked into the inlet... regards ricky

well the heads are rebuilt, and ready to be refitted, we then checked the block, that was a good call, where the oil had been burning away due to the heavy right foot, and the constant low oil level (because it doesn't smoke as much) the pistons have shrunk considerably and there is a lot of movement between the liners and pistons, so we have dug out the original block from under the bench and are going to use it. there is virtually no play in the pistons, so have just to assemble it all and refit the engine/box assembly.. regards ricky

i had the space at work under the bench, the block was good just broken valves on one cylinder and the gearbox was very good, you just never know when you need a gearbox  the engine is now running just needs to be filled with a/freeze, check g/box oil and road test... hopefully the engine will be smoother and quieter than it had become over the last year.. when they were doing the change the cam sensor was broken, really easy to do, but luckily the crank sensor appears to be the same.. seems to work anyway.. not bad time wise, considering it has been done between normal jobs..... regards ricky

all back together and working properly again  am a happy bunny again  however more probs 1 outer cv joint making a noise (has been for a while really) radiator fins corroded at the bottom of the rad, middle part of the exhaust needs welding around the edge of the box, nothing to serious  cv joint already ordered from ebay. will weld the exhaust when i get a ramp free.. the radiator can wait for a while, will probably do nearer the summer.. regards ricky

they are not as dodgy as people think, i have over heated this engine when it was in before, and didn't blow the head gasket. the oe rover gasket is the weak one, when they are uprated to the land rover gasket they become much more reliable.. regards ricky

welll its off the road again... when the engine was put together i forgot to mention to my mechanic that the liners had been moved, when it was taken out to check "things" consequently i have a very bad case of smoke on start up and water loss, from number 4 cylinder (back bank in the middle) liner not fully sealing, and leaking water into the cylinder the equivilant to hgf... so is off the road until i can get the engine out and strip the engine again and reseal the liner and reassemble it all.. regards ricky

well some progress.. we took the engine apart and found the liner on one cylinder is cracked, it looks like when the valves broke the piston was knocked sideways and cracked the liner in the middle, there is a fair but obvious crack about 2-3 inches long and quite wide in the centre.. that'll be my misfire then and the smoke and the water loss... just have to find the time to reassemble and refit the engine and away we go.... i am hoping to have it done by the time peterborough comes around if not i will attend in the maestro... regards ricky

That's a pain. I've heard of dropped liners but never a cracked one.

just an update we checked the block more carefully and found the block cracked where the liner was.. so the OTHER block has been stripped and we are now making one good engine out of the two... so to clarify we have 6 good pistons, 11 good liners, 2 good cranks, 1 good block, more heads than i know what to do with (6), should just about be enough to make up one engine  as long as we don't find any more problems  luckily its only a v6  regards ricky
