Still looking like new
At last I've got round to taking some pictures of my 1998 Rover 820 Sterling which I show below. I bought ner new as a financed company car & after 3 years changed jobs that came with a policy company car, so my wife Carol has used it as "her" car since then (when we go out together I drive).
Relatively low mileage: 104,000 and the engine is sweet as anything. Minor oil leak from cam cover, barely uses any oil, reasonable mpg if you don't thrash her (the car, that is!!), slightly temperemental electrics, as comfortable as any modern luxury car: why didn't it sell in greater numbers? It costs less than £200 a year to insure fully comprehensive too!
Just passed her MOT - needed a replacement steering box and got advisories on "reduced effectiveness of front shock absorbers". Are stanadrd shockers easy to get hold of? Something to worry about next October before the MOT.
Surprisingly for a British built car there is very little rust indeed: just a spot about the size of a 10p coin at the side of the bonnet. I keep her under a breathable weatherproof car cover overnight (the car, that is!!) now that winter seems to have started. If it's a dry day I take the cover off, otherwise it stays on. That policy seems to have protected the paintwork and prevented rust over the years.
Best wishes, Dave B

Welcome to the forum, mate. Got to say, this car looks very nice. Very clean and shiny What kind of electrical niggles do you have? They are commonplace with these cars, and you'll probably find the solution to all of them on here Saw your Daimlers in the previous thread. Lovely too. Especially the 250. I love those, the noise more than anything
All the best

Re: Still looking like new
Well, what are the chances? Quite by accident I strolled down a street in my village that I never normally walk or drive down. There on a drive was an "identical" 820 Sterling to mine: same colour, same spec, same year, similar mileage, body condition pretty similar, similar electrical niggles! The owner has lived in the village for 5 years and has seen my car out and about but I've never seen his before (I've lived here 25 years).
To put this in perspective, there are only approx. 900 houses in the entire parish, significantly fewer in the village (550 at a guess)! I'm now going to look around and see how many other "identical" cars I can spot in the village: I daresay very few.
Any mathematicians out there who could compute the chance?
Best wishes, Dave B

A lovely car you've got there Dave.
Take a picture of the other 800 with the registration and pop in in the "Was it you?" section. Might aspire the owner to join the forum.

Re: Still looking like new
She has just passed her MOT again, it seems that she wants very much to stay on the road! 113,000 miles on a 2 litre engine over 16 years is not much of a problem, far less than some of the mechanics (shock absorbers) getting tired, as well as the seemingly non-stop repairs to the electrics!
I last had the cam belt replaced around 90,000 miles, can anyone tell me what is the recommended period of replacement for the cam belt for the 2 litre 1998 engine please?
Best wishes, Dave B

Re: Still looking like new
ooh it's almost identical to my Oscar a 825 Sterling, which incidentally has been in the garage for a year due to electrical issues…on my way to work at 530am on a very rainy cold M1 at 70, and all four windows and the sunroof opened by themselves and decided not to budge. I had to pull over on the hard shoulder and use the lazy locking function to close it all up again.
On another morning, the wipers developed a mind of their own and then every time I dipped the lights the stereo would die.
When i've got a bit of spare cash put aside I'll give him to my mate Kieren to get back to top notch. It's got a big crack and scrape in the rear bumper too after I was hit by an unmarked police car on a shout…thats irony for you lol poor old Oscar
