FYI

Post by Richard Moss » Tue Aug 29, 2017 7:55 pm

Given that the chances of me owning an 800 again are very small, I,ve dcided to leave the Facebook group (partly because I find Facebook increasingly irritating in general).

However, I don't plan to leave this forum - but as you'll have noticed, I'm a lo less active than I was.

I don't use it that much myself. I'll probably just keep milling about as I have done for the last 5 years. :)

Maybe it will change once my 800 trailer has gone, I have no plans for another 800.

I don't really use the Facebook page either, when I have posted a comment previously it usually gets a waste of time answer and is usually repeated where people have not read the previous comments made. I will stick with it as Chris says and use this forum when I need anything. Hope all is good with you and yours Richard.

Everything's going pretty well, thanks, Simon. The chances of me finding a job in the UK anytime soon are close to zero, though, but I quite enjoy it here and it mkes me appreciate the UK more when I do visit (and get to drive my MGC :) )

I'm not keen on the word "oldest" :)

I think perhaps the words "longest standing" would be better Richard - after all you started rover800.co.uk then changed it to 800.info and owned 800s for a considerable amount of that, if not longer.
I suspect VTB would also come into the "longest standing members" and not just because he's much taller than the rest of us!
I was thinking the other day, come february next year i've had my current Sterling 10 years, something of a record for me as the previous record was 18 months owning the same car.
The Coupé is now 4 years in my ownership and even the Volvo is well over a year now. Must be getting attached in my old age lol! :D

Dave

Richard, is there any chance of an update re your present life out in the desert? Stuff like family, cars, off-roading, job, new hobbies etc? Of course, without revealing sensitive information of any sort.

To be fair, I didn't start 800.co.uk - that was Doug Hall. Unfortunately, when he lost interest in 800s, he took the domain name with him. I wonder if it's available now? 800.info was as close as we could get at an affordable price.

I'll try to remember to do an update soon - when I'm not busy mending Jeeps :)

I tried typing "rover800.co.uk" into my search bar and not a lot happened, not sure if it's available or not.

As for fixing Jeeps, that's a full time job! To be fair though, they're usually pretty reliable but do have some parts that like to wear out a bit quicker than expected.

I obviously found 800.co.uk just before the aforementioned Doug Hall took the domain away as my computer died not long after and it took a while to get another. When i did, i eventually found 800.info and the rest is documented in these hallowed forum pages! :D

Dave

As far as I can tell, rover800.co.uk is not available

The Jeeps are more reliable and more robust than my Discovery 2 was. I was glad to see the back of that thing

Aside from the problems that i inherited with my Jeep, the only problem i had other than routine maintenance was the PCM (Powertrain Command Module/engine management) got corrupted and caused rough running and no alternator output.

The solution was simple, disconnect, reset and reconnect it, done by removing the battery terminals, holding them together for 30 seconds (to discharge the capacitors in the ECU/PCM) then reconnect the battery.

Apparently this is a lot more common than it sounds, usually caused by the battery going flat but can be caused by other, seemingly random things.

Other than that, mine always started, stopped, went well and while i owned it was the "weapon of choice" for long distance because it was running on LPG so gave me the equivalent running costs of 40-50mpg on petrol. :D

Dave

How time flies.

I think it was 2003/4 ish when 800.co.uk started?

Do the Yahoo groups still exist? They were the original group of guys that were into all things 800. I was a member on there but didn't post much.

The 800 V6 Yahoo group still exists Chris, for the time being at least. Yahoo seems to be "pruning" its groups so its days may be numbered - time will tell!

Times move on I guess. That group was started due to a fall out. A little bit like how this started I guess.
