The be fair, it's not as remote as it could be. Most of our activity take place in a triangle between Al Ain, Dubai and Abu Dhabi and there is such good driving to be had nearby that we don't really need to go too far. A lot of the area has "gatch" tracks running across it (tracks made of crushed rock on top of the sand) and these give you quick access to/from the driving areas but the trade off is a rough ride and quite often we'll blast up a gatch track until we're near where we want to go and then head off into the sand.

Of course, there is an area known as "The Empty Quarter" - between a town called Liwa and the border with Saudi Arabia. This is seriously remote and not to be taken lightly. A while back a group of locals set off in one Landcruiser for a drive, got lost, got stuck and the police didn't find their bodies for months. Rule number one - never fewer than 2 cars, usually more!

I was going to say, do the locals do this sort of thing, or is it just mad dogs and englishmen ? But obviously they do, and get it wrong !

Our club is about 50:50 Emiratis and expats. I think it's fair to say that the Emiratis are generally a bit more "adrenalin fuelled" than the expats but everyone gets along nicely.

Just seen these on the internet. I wonder how much they'd cost?

There'a Suzuki Samurai on ebay.com that has them fitted - along with a 4.3L V6 engine. Asking price? $16,000.

How my Jeep might look......

Time for an update:

Jobs done: New LH front CV joint, oil filter adapter O rings replaced (to cure a "normal" Jeep leak), ARB drop links replaced due to the old ones being knackered, new vacuum check valve on the heater/aircon system, aircon regassed and now cooling again, plus oil/filter change.

I also removed the evaporative emissions canister because it broke (well, I broke it coming down a dune a bit fast!) and that cured some rough running nthat was being caused by the air leak through the broken canister. One engine mount had to bve replaced but I had that done by the garage due to lack of time.

To do: sell it (see below)

* because I've agreed to buy one of these : 4.7L V8 (my first ever V8!), 5 speed auto, grey leather interior, 2" suspension lift and Bilstein shocks etc.

I've not driven this particular car but I have seen it in action and it is impressive. I also know the seller and know that it has been well looked after. The V8 does make a significant difference when on sand due to the extra torque and it is also a bit larger and more civilised so should be a better family vehicle.

My current one is great and has been a fantastic learning experience (maintaining and driving) and I now trust myself to go offroad in something that is newer and more valuable. I'll be sorry to see it go but the new one IS a V8!

Too valuable for the places I go to.

Mine's starting to show rust in places here and there after only one day out. So I reckon I'll be swapping mine every now and then.

Mate who I had the vitesse off had one of them after his previous older one (same as yours and chris's), although he stuck with the 4.0.

Nice cars, well worth the extra over the older model in my opinion, I did have a few spares for that shape in my shed including a load liner, roof rack, spare alloy and a few other bits n bobs, think only thing I have remaining though is the retractable cargo cover, oddly they all sold much easier than the stuff I had for the older model.

What level spec is the new one?
