The Queen of the Skies heads for retirement. These were a huge part of my life - I grew up seeing them fly over my house and then went on to fly them for the RAF (the proper transport version not the slightly scruffy tanker version, though!). I took them all over the world, with the exception of those countries that put red stars on their aeroplanes. One of the few types to make it through their entire RAF service without a fatal accident.

Re: Queen of the Skies
I wonder if they'll allow one to keep flying as an airshow feature. I know they won't sell fast jets to enthusiasts (more's the pity for Harriers etc) but one similarly preserved to XH558 would be nice.
Perhaps if I win the lottery I'll become a US citizen and buy a couple of fast jets.

I think that it has been looked at but that the cost was prohibitive and the demand probably not there. Bruntingthorpe are getting one and I think that will be kept operable like the Victor and Lightning.

Spotted a Spitfire quite high up, following a Hurricane above Ilkley, West Yorks today.
