I bought a thing...

Meet the S.S. Transit.

100T350L

95hp
LWB
RWD
Hightop (I only JUST can't stand up inside it!)

135k on the clock.

Works Van with a 1530kg payload and 2.8t towing capacity (need my B+E to tow more than 750kgs though)
It has the towing pack option with gigantic brakes (discs all around rather than disc & drum) 5.11 diff
Base spec otherwise

Ex-Morrison Cable works van, still has all the racking, hand washing/welfare stuff and 170A alternator to drive the 9KVA 110V inverter. I'll be wiring in a 110/240 transformer backwards to give ~4.5KVA 240v for charging of cordless tools, microwave, air compressor etc.
Looking for a standalone underslung Webasto heater - useful for the lads to nip inside it for lunch when it's tipping it down outside!

Limited to 120kph (72mph GPS) which suits me just fine. Likes sitting at 60mph at 3k RPM. If I don't need the towing capacity I'd be looking at getting the highway gears in it as currently it gets 22-25mpg...

Makes the "standard" van next to it look small and the 820 TINY!

I also bought the following plate for it ;-)

Youngest vehicle I've ever owned.

No rust except for the odd untreated stonechip.
Glow plugs are dead/dying
Front wheel bearings need changing
Brakes will need doing for next MOT as the discs are crusty.

Traction control is very good, doesn't kill power just uses the ABS - meant for building site access. Just keep your foot planted and it finds grip somewhere!

Now the trick is convincing Dad to detail it ;-)

You bought it then? Looks a useful bit of kit in many ways!

Thinking about the heater options, the Webasto is a nice idea but adds a lot of weight and has the potential for fuel leaks. As you have that nice big 9kVA 110V inverter, how about this :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Electric-110v ... SwopRYiyrQ

Image

You can also get 110V compressors, microwaves etc, saves any H&S grief with some Jobs-Worth coming on site and seeing your van as the lads enter to make their bacon butties and tea in the morning.

As regards the gearing, the easiest way is a taller diff to give better cruising ability and the glow plugs :

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ford_ ... bd9&000164

There's umpteen vids on youtube on changing them, kind of suggests it's not a straightforward job.

Are you keeping the "go faster" stripes when you persuade your dad to detail it? :D
Cheers,
Dave

Those sort are cheaper to run and you can have your dream car without worrying about it being stolen or vandalised!
Some pretty rare cars there Henrik, especially with their original boxes too! I recognise a few from my own collection (that i no longer have) such as the James Bond Aston Martin, the Rolls Royce Phantom IV towards the back of the shot, the Jags and the big Triumph etc. It was a long time ago since i last saw mine and i might be wrong but isn't that a Humber Hawk in front of the blue MkX Jag?
Cheers,
Dave

Dave, it's actually a Singer (no145).
The collection is fantastic and it was assembled by my father over a long period of time many years ago. I had a quote from a big collector in Canada (IIRC) but they never tend to get the values seen in the books even though they are quite valuable. But the boxed gift sets of racers are quite nice... Also as he passed we think it would be of greater value to show them on display rather than getting them sold. The memories from my childhood are worth more.

Probably the same die used to make them Henrik - after all many Singers, Humbers, Hillmans etc were just badge-engineered variants of other Rootes Group cars at the time. I didn't have any paint on mine (thinking about it it might have been a Humber Snipe that i had) so it looked a bit different.

I totally understand you not wanting to sell such a fabulous collection even without factoring in the sentimental value and i'm glad you do want to keep it! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Very nice too - handy for doing driveshaft nuts on 800s with that amount of torque! :D

I've just bought one of these things, photo shamelessly stolen from ebay :

Image

Paid ATS twice to sort the tracking on my Volvo and it still isn't right, they had to have 3 goes at my Coupé and that isn't great and at £36 a pop for the tracking it makes sense to have my own gauge!

Although it landed earlier today i've yet to try it out, it arrived like the baby spaceship in that film - Batteries Not Included! :D

Dave

Last time recently i did the tracking on my MK4 astra i used a tape measure, back and front of the tyre, really worked well.

Did you spot the rear Rover 800 Koni shocks in the background? :D

I'd already tried the string and tape measure method, it didn't work very well except for an initial reading of 13mm toe-out on one wheel! Meant to be a total of 2.0mm toe-in on both!

Previously i've used my own self-built tracking gauges but they were damaged during the move here a few years ago and i've never had the time to go through the various measurements etc to repair them and also i'm struggling for space here so smaller is better in that respect.

Just got to work out how to set the laser jobby up to check the rear tracking on the 800s once i've done the Volvo!

I spotted the Konis, wasn't sure what they were other than shocks so didn't mention them. :D
Cheers,
Dave
