Something a bit random here for you. In a round of free upgrades off Virgin that had nothing to do with the £3.99 a month price increase we had our broadband speeded up the other week.

We already had 100Mb and have had for some time and never found that an issue even with the plethora of kit I seem to have amassed since not dabbling with cars as much. So I wasn't looking to upgrade it in all honesty, though as it was 'free' why wouldn't I?

A quick speed test shows the improvement over 100Mb, I do notice the extra upload speed as we only saw 6-7Mb while on 100Mb.

Anyway, it made me think/wonder if everyone else is on super duper broadband these days?

If you are what sort of speeds are you seeing? Is anyone still struggling to get anything exciting?

Is anyone actually still using dial up?

I cannot even begin to imagine what 152mb/s is like. Our DSL broadband managed 2mb/s on its best days, averaged about 1.2 and december last year dropped to 0.1 and became unusable. Plusnet and openreach had many goes at fixing it but only seemed to manage a temporary fix of a few days at a time.

We now use a mobile broadband dongle on 3G which gives peak speeds of about 12, averaging around 5-6 mb/s. Still pretty slow for what cable users get, but blisteringly fast compared to what we were getting.

When my "wired" contract ends in June, I intend to go completely mobile and tell BT and their Georgian infrastructure to go swivel.

Crikey Tom, i thought it was bad round here! On average i get about 18Mbps download and between 0.8-1.6Mbps upload but we don't have cable, fibre-optic or anything similar here. Allegedly i could get fibre-optic with download speeds of "up to" 38Mbps. However, it is not true fibre-optic as the exchange to the Distribution Point (green boxes by the roadside) might be fibre-optic but from there to here is a very dodgy, 40+ year old copper connection.

They say a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and the copper cable is the weak link for me. I'm guessing your weak link is your location and/or an antiquated exchange.

As for Chris - i think he's just making us jealous!  Joking aside, i'm not sure 150+Mbps would be any good as my Ethernet port is only 100Mbps anyway!
Cheers,
Dave

I wasn't expecting people to still be so far behind.

I know there's faster than what I have as well so a long way to catch up.

My laptop doesn't support gigabit ethernet either which I was surprised and a little miffed at only being 3 years old. It's excessive in all honesty for most use. Though I do notice films taking less time to download but we'll gloss over that. ;)

I was told by an engineer that there is 7 miles of very elderly copper cable between us and the exchange. We are near the end of a very long rural line. Less than a mile away in the main part of the village they are getting a basic fibre connection, but friends who have it are only getting about 25mb/s.

I'm on BT and get 38 Mb/s with fttc. That's enough for a domestic user who doesn't download every movie ever to be released. I do have unlimited bandwidth so I'm contemplating setting up my website and hosting it from a dedicated pc in the house.

Mine is giving 21mbps download, 5.5mbps upload.

The internet here is choked by government security filters (filtering out anything they consider undesirable - adult, Judaism, Christianity, democracy etc) but they can be accessed via VPN

A steady 13/14mbps here from a standard BT/Plusnet line.

I could access fibre if I could face the cost, but to be honest that's good enough for me. I can still stream HD stuff from the Amazon Fire Stick and iPlayer when needed, and that's pretty much my only test.

This is the one i use and get about 18-19Mbps download, 1-1.4Mbps upload and a ping test anywhere between 70mS and 150mS on average.

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk

I'm not entirely sure what a ping test is (i should know really) but as far as i can work out it sends a small bit of data to check it is connected to the wibbly-wobbly-web and how quickly it gets an acknowledgement back is the ping test time. I think!

Results from a test done just now :

Ping Download Upload
94 ms 20.07 Mb/s 1.40 Mb/s

Dave

At least you have a signal on Three! Living where i do, there's almost no signal indoors and if they send a plane or 10 up, forget the signal completely!

I'm on BT fibre unlimited and need to be with two laptops, three games consoles, three tablets, four mobiles, not to mention two smart TV's.

If I can ever get them off I'll run a speed test :(
