Anyone with Lathe ownership experience

Post by Nuts4my827 » Tue Jan 02, 2018 11:19 am

Good Morning, and (Obligatory) Happy New Year everyone.

My wife has had an interest for a while in making model furnature in Dolls Houses and for other things and we have been talking about the idea of turning part of my extensive garage into a workshop for her. I can convert an electric planer into a milling/moulding machine but she would also like a lathe for turning legs etc.

Does anyone have, or know someone with experience with mini hobby lathes?

Primarily will be for wood turning, but there may be occasions when metal may be turned.

Some I've seen have a drill attachment too.

Thought I would ask here, before i go on specialist sites and google :D

The new chinese and indian made multipurpose lathe/drill/multitool things are just as awful as your worst nightmares.

A wood lathe is a wood lathe and a metal lathe is a metal lathe. The one that are sold as doing both do neither well.

Buy the best you can afford and remember that with industrial/light industrial machinery, old, cheap and well-used will more often than not be much better than new, shiny and expensive.

What Tom said ^^^^^ Phil. Your wife must have a lot of patience to even think of trying to make something that delicate though!

I do have something that might interest you. Many moons ago Black & Decker produced a set of tools to be used with the then current power drill. These tools were (from memory without checking them all) jigsaw, circular saw, hedge trimmer, random orbital sander, drill press (turns the drill into a pillar drill) and last but definitely not least, a wood turning lathe.

I've been thinking of selling the collection for some time now, mainly because i'll never use it. I took the hedge trimmer out of its box (marked £4/10-) to try it (it had never been used!) and have checked the other stuff works as well but it seems a shame to use it for general stuff when it should either be mounted in glass cases for posterity or better still, used by someone to produce something special.

If you're interested, i'll get some photos of it all and yes, it will come with a working drill suitable for fitting to all the attachments.

I also have a 1943 Myford "Table Top" lathe for metal turning. It's what would now be described as a model makers lathe and this particular model was only made for about 18 months. I wouldn't want to put it on a modern table though!

I haven't decided what i'm doing with the Myford yet but i'm sure we could sort something out on the B&D stuff. :D

PS i also have a Bosch Electric Plane that i'll be selling soon! :D
Cheers,
Dave

My father in law has several metal working lathes. He gets the best deals by buying second hand - going for good quality, well maintained, British made equipment on ebay or through model engineering clubs. He does have a small, new one (Chinese made) but the quality was well short of what he wanted and so spent loads of time upgrading it.
