Well it's not going to be cheap but I'm not concerned about that. More to the point, when will the garage in this little village get round to it... busy man - he even looked at it on Sunday but the battery was flat :-/

Turns out it was actually the fuel filter housing coming apart, a common fault according to the MGR specialist I rang. My garage man then rang him to ask advice and he was talked through it.

Commonly misdiagnosed by the AA, it seems.

Also got a new battery to replace the original 10 year old one, turning over quicker now.

I ordered some mudflaps and had a look to see how easy fitting would be... so fortuitously noticed the n/s front wheel arch liner hatch (used to change bulbs) had disappeared at some point and was merrily letting mud etc spray in off the wheel onto the back of the headlight and into the air intake. Great. Bodged a fix until a replacement arrived. Now I have to wait until the weather lets me clean it out and change the filter.
