Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
Yesterday was a fine day so i took the chance and put the SD1 into hibernation. Woke up very early so it was nice and quit on the road during its last drive of the year. Got it nice up to working temperature.
Then i put in a additive in the fuel tank and filled it up with premium of course. Then also filled the tires with a higher pressure:
Then a good wash, dry and a vacuem of the interior:
I also took out the battery:
Now i only have to install a moisture eater but that is underway.
Sleep well!

Awwww, hibernation is always a sad time!
On the upside, spring is coming and you can get it out to enjoy again!

Yeah it feels a bit double. Nice that I can preserve it and protect it but driving it is nicer.

Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
Best wishes to all!
Winter is here so a good time to tackle another project on my SD1!
My Rover 3500 looks a lot better than it did but some things still needed some TLC. The wheels were looking very tatty.
Because i don't drive my Rovers in winter it was the best opportunity to do it now.
This is how the worst rim looked like. Paint peeling of and corrosion:
At first, I planned to sand them but because of the design, the deep corrossion and my big hands my colleagues adviced me to have them sandblasted. Good advice. After a week i got them back. A blank canvas:
After this, I applied primer so the painter could apply colour and clear:
Modern art :
Grey colour and 2k clear:
In the Rover factory, the edge of the face of the rim were then machined down to create the silver side. Then clear was applies. Because clear does not last that long on bare aluminum, and because we don't have a lathe at work, i decided to paint the edge silver (same silver as i used on the centre caps). Mask of and yes, that is a long job haha:
Silver:
And clear coat again:
And then leave alone for a couple of days to dully harden:
Cleary, the Rover was of the ground during all of this so i had a chance to check everything again and make some things look fresh again. Some things looked very tired:
I painted the brake calipers with heat resistant paint, removed rust from the hub and wire and applied grease:
At the rear, I removed rust from the drums and applied rust prev primer, normale primer and a round of black. Also applied some grease were the wheels are bolted on:
When I looked in the rear right side arch I noticed a small rust area that i overlooked during al the work of the previous years. Anyway, tackled it now:
Removed the rust to bare metal:
Rust preventive primer:
Degreased the area and applied seam sealer :
Finished of with black stonechip spray:
In the real left wheel arch I checked my work and it looked fine but decided to clean some areas to be sure and degreased the area and applied seam sealer and black stonechip spray:
I could not resist to freshen up the wheel nuts. They are in sight so i removed the surface rust:
Primer:
Silver (Same silver as the rim edge):
Thin layer of 1k clear:
Fresh again:
Re-assembled the wheels to start with new air valves:
Tires back on the rims, balanced and cleaned everything back home. Also applied tire preserver on the inside and outside. I also applied wax on the wheels:
Very happy with the result and very thankful for the help of my colleagues!

Excellent results Marc and i'm glad your colleagues recommended sand blasting instead of hand sanding!

Can't believe they have drums at the rear. What are the brakes like?

I can't speak for Marcs brakes Simon but all the SD1s (i had 7) had excellent brakes. Most of the braking is done by the front brakes and if memory serves they were 4-pot calipers and big discs so plenty of stopping power.
