Awesome Henrik! The dynamo upgrade has turned into a minor refurb/refresh! Looking forward to more instalments! :D

The old drain plug for the radiator was totally deteriorated so in a way it’s really good i did this now. The plug actually fell out when We touched it so it would have resulted in a very messy garage floor!

The plug wasn’t original and the replacement isn’t either but I like building stuff out of junk and as this is brass it’s more suited.

That old plug looks like it's suffered electrolytic erosion Henrik!

Hopefully the new one lasts longer nd doesn't suffer the same fate! :D

It went surprisingly easy to swap the dynamo. Now I just need to figure out the wiring diagram and transfer it into my electrical system. Shouldn’t be a problem! It looks like it’s going to be an Austin summer after all!

Thanks guys!

I did some reading last night and apparently there have been problems with the new gears. So some more fiddling to get the dynamator gear out (dynamo-distributor) but it came out fairly easy. Old original gear in place.

Well yes, but it is welcome. I knew there would be some difficulties plus extra work involved and that's why it's been on hold. This is mostly only straight forward mechanical work and I feel comfortable there, it's the electrics that scare me. The problem is my loom isn't done according to a regular wiring diagram for a Seven. It's made from scratch and even though that makes it very simple it doesn't say anywhere how to hook up this new gadget. From what I read it seems simple but I don't want to fry the thing straight away. :D

What might present another problem is if the gears foul and wear out that stories on the web say - especially if the wear occurs on the camshaft gear. Even though I have spare gears somewhere the extra work involved if it needs the camshaft gear off is not what I would like. Not a catastroph but these things are getting scarce and changing the camshaft gear is not done in a coffe break. A "new" gear needs to be lapped into the coned camshaft to make the end float correct. I'm not even sure my spare camshaft gear is usable.

Why not restore the old dynamo then? The old dynamo is burnt due to overheating so it needs full refurbish, which would probably be very expensive here, and that doesn't solve the problem anyway. Being converted to 12v present a problem, the dynamo isn't really suited for it to begin with as it is too weak to give the power enough. It just burns again. And even if modern cut outs, even electronic ones are available it would be above my pay grade to get it working...

Why not keeping it 6v? The Seven run fine on 6v electrics some would say but in modern traffic the extra is needed according to me to make it more useable. Lights are better, starter brisker and the wiring doesn't have to be thick as a finger to get stuff working. Plus everything is double the money, a 6v battery is 3-4 times more expensive than a small, still highly effective 12v.

But all in this is lovely art work. It's purely mechanical and loads of joy, grease, oil and BSW-threads.

I'll try to investigate the electrical side of the Dynamator Henrik, fairly sure it's a simple 2-wire connection, one to battery +ve, the other to the -ve side of the charge warning light which should probably be 3W - the +ve side of the charge warning light only powered with ignition on.

If i'm right i'll draw a diagram for you.

I can see why you put the job off for a while, that said it will be good to have it all done and working correctly! :D

Dave

Thanks Dave, I might ask for your advice as I know your skills. But already there you have a problem. I don’t have a warning light.

That said in my switch box on the dash there is a warning light so it could be used. The light should be 12v 0.2A or 2.2watts if I remember it correctly. The cut out isn’t used At all after the installing of the dynamator. Coil is simple 12v job and everything is negative earth. The main power circuit has a main switch and goes straight to the starter from battery (via switch). The starter is mechanical so only operated by mechanism on a wire.
The rest is pretty separate. Junction box with fuses to the lights, horns etc and switches for those in the loom.

There you are Henrik, exactly as i thought it was and a bonus of finding a ready-made diagram too!

Take a feed from an ignition switched +12V to one side of your 2.2W warning light, take the other side of the warning light to the small field/D terminal on the Dynamator, heavy cable from the large terminal on the Dynamator to battery +ve, job done!

You may want to add an earth strap from the Dynamator case to a good earth point on the engine in case there might be continuity problems through the alloy timing cover etc. More "belt'n'braces" than a necessity but i'd suggest better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. :D

Dave

Thanks Dave. It was like i thought then. Great having it confirmed! I do have that diagram as it came with the dyno but as you might figures out I know more of history and geography than electrics!

History and geography were two of my worst subjects. I know where to come for answers now though! :P

The Dyna should be easy enough once you get your head round it which i'm sure you will. :D

For the first time in a very long time this Little companion see daylight! New ”dynamo” in place and it seems to run ok. Many thanks to Dave for guiding me in the dark! And Now I even have a working chargelight!
