Dan's 1998 Rover 100 Ascot SE

Post by DLR » Sun Aug 01, 2010 5:47 pm

If I had my way, I'd be cruising in a big Rover. But it's all about living within your means, and I couldn't justify running it at such a 'young' age. That and I didn't really have adequate storage, considering I'd lost the garage to the clutter which doesn't fit in the house. So it's left for a life up north with a mechanic, leaving me car-less.

Which brings me onto the more sensible first time driver's car; a 1998 Rover 100 Ascot SE (what does 'SE' stand for, slightly equipped?) with only 67,000 miles on the clock. One owner, full service history, all original documents and bits and pieces from the dealership (receipts and even both the 'Evans Halshaw' keyfobs, number plates and tax disc holder; even has the metal key number tag and 'Rover 100 immobiliser instruction' tag).

Interior - it is evident that a dog has been in there, to say the least. I spent around 2 hours hoovering the back seat the other day and it is still thick with hair. Other than that though, it is all there and a fairly comfortable place to be. Only downside is one of the rear doors has a dodgy central locking motor, therefore doesn't work. But when am I going to be using the back?

Exterior - a very attractive shade of Nightfire Red. Paintwork is scratched around the door handles (front and rear) on the drivers side. Needs a good t-cut and polish. The rear arches are the only let-downs really, the passenger side being in black primer and the driver's side being a bit crusty. It is, however, not that bad.

Other points to mention:

- The ignition barrel was changed at some point because the steering lock was nackered, so it has two different keys - one for the exterior locks (boot, petrol cap and the front doors) and another for the ignition. Only one copy of each, so ideally need a spare.

- The cassette player is shite, to put it mildly. Either the buttons do naff all, or the display is frozen on 'CodE'. I don't know. All I know is, I am in need of a new radio in the front as it doesn't work.

- DOG HAIR

Now for my proudest moment...it came with three keyfobs - one worked, the other had no buttons, and the other was complete but did bugger all. So this afternoon I took the buttons of the 'bugger all' fob and soldered them onto the spare fob. This was a wild stab in the dark as the seller claimed that the both of them were useless and had lost contact with the car, but I could have them anyway. An hour and some badly burnt fingers later, I have two fully functioning fobs. Considering the last time I held a soldering iron I was at school and ended up burning somebody's crotch and setting fire to somebody else's bag, I think I did rather well.

Now for some photos:

Not the best photos, but I don't think the drivers side looks too bad?

Interior, complete with keep-fit windows and steering

Taxed until end of January and MOT'd until November, I'm quite impressed with it for the £370 I paid.

Apologies for the long, rambling post about a car not entirely relevant to the forum - first Sunday off in a while and I've got nowt else to do! :P

I like that Dan-always had a soft spot for Metros.
(In fact I have one on the drive awaiting MOT and selling on!)
Kind Regards

Hey that looks like a nice little car to buzz around in. I've never owned a Metro and only ever driven one (A C-reg Austin Metro, however I was towed to Walsall in John W's one) but I've also got a bit of a soft spot for them.

If I had one I'd have to have full leather top-notch spec. Only ever seen those specs in brochures and pics.

Did the car come with a small black folder? I once got one of these folders out of a Nightfire Metro Kensington I saw in a scrappy. The car look like it had been well cared for once as it had all the documents/papers/receipts the lot. Sad to see it in the scrappy.

Arches dont look too bad, at least someones had a go at one of them. Just blast a rattle can of Nightfire and some laquer and your well on way. Other side will need some treating with anti-corrosion stuff, do this quick because Metro arches go like wheetabix after a while and you'll be brushing up your arch with a dustpan and brush.

Radio, check the documents for the code, if not, take the radio out and look on the top for a 4 digit code. If not, and you want to fit an aftermarket radio, take the radio out, and get yourself a universal connector which should fit into most aftermarket radios.

All in all, looks like a nice car and should see you in good steed.

That is a nice little car Dan, great for buzzing around in and, as you say, for a new driver. I guess the insurance premium was a bit more reasonable

A sensible thing to do Dan and as said previously a nice little car.

Regarding your first Sunday off and having nothing to do you certainly will have lots to keep you busy now you have got the car!!

They are great cars - remember to grease the front and rear grease nipples, not many "modern" cars have them and people tend to forget. likewise the manually adjusted rear brakes.

No black folder that I know of, just the massive (and I really do mean massive) wad of receipts and old MOT's and the grey folder for the manuals (minus the 'In Car Entertainment' instruction book). I'm intrigued, what was in this folder you found? I'd be interested in seeing some photos if you still have it if possible, for reference.

Also, I have the codes and such - this is the first Rover I've come across which still has it's 'Rover Security Information card'! Until I saw this one, I thought they were just fictional and items of a Rover owner's dream. Ironically, the previous owner didn't think it had any of the codes, yet I go and pick it up and the card is in the literature pack in the glove box. So I actually have all the codes, which I didn't think I'd have. Just the radio doesn't seem to respond to anything, so either I'm being thick or it really is fubared.

How easy would it be to fit a stereo/CD changer from an 800, i.e. an R950 unit?

That was my main reason for buying it - it's no Golf/Saxo/etc. so is less likely to be ragged to death, more so due to it being a 1.1. Have contacted a young driver's insurance specialist - www.i-kube.co.uk - and they'll do it for around 2 grand. Steep, but I couldn't get it any cheaper without changing my name to 'Danielle' and chopping off my balls. That and I won't be covered between 11pm and 5am, the peak time for young drivers to crash their cars, without paying £60 per night. If needs be, I'll have the 'ped to pop out during those times. Just need to save up the deposit now! (and, of course, book my test :P )

I was daft buying the 800 when I did, should have waited, etc. But it will happen again some day, when the time is right and I have a few years no claims.

Tell you what though - I had a list the length of my arm with jobs to do on the 800. The 100 has a list half the size (mainly little things which could be done in an afternoon)! When next payday comes, the list will most probably become non-existent! :D

Stereo and changer from an 800 would be an easy swap-wiring the same, you just have to run the changer wire and find a way to mount the changer in the boot. They don't fetch much on eBay either.

Really? Just plug-and-play in theory then? No adaptors, etc. required? I thought that it would be something along those lines being it'd be an expensive thing to do to have different radios and different connectors for every car. Thanks for that info, looks like a system from an 800 is on the shopping list!

Should've kept the stereo and changer from the 800 I sold - Kyle had disabled the code. Ah well, live and learn! Anybody got one for sale? :P

I had a R960 and changer in every non 800 I had they are probably one of the best car radios ever made for Rover, Alex Wedge has a few of them, maybe he'd like to sell one.

Certainly:

Inside the folders are the usual Rover products and services sections, and sections where you can keep your MOTs/warrantys/receipts.

The car this folder came from was a Rover 100 (111) Ascot SE (R904CGC) in Nightfire Red. The receipt for this car is still inside the folder as it was shown as bought for £4278 in 2000 by a lady owner.

Interestingly, I also found a similar folder in a Rover Sterling KV6 at a breakers yard in Henley-in-Arden:

Image

Similar stuff with reciepts, MOTs, Warranty stuff etc...

There are a still quite a few Rover 100s around scrappys and breakers so apart from the usual parts, you can find stuff like this in them.

Hope this helps.

Those folders are a rare sight, usually if you bought a 100 you got the dingy grey plastic folder! It almost seems to depend on where the car first came from.

Well done on the car, Nightfire is one of the best colours the 100 came in, although I do advise ditching those trims, I swapped mine for Metro GTa trims and the fuel consumption went down!
