Having owned 4 R6 Metros and currently running my Nans 100 Knightsbridge SE I can happily endorse the R6/R100 it is perfect for a new driver. I always found mine more responsive than the Driving School Fiesta even though that was 'better' because it had PAS, Airbag, Air Con Alloys etc

Now mine - although still in Mal's back yard! It will be a handy runaround for summer visits and then make a suitable learner vehicle for Hannah in a couple of years.
Metros/100s are great little cars and I'm quite looking forward to having a go with this over the summer!

As a lifelong Metro nut, well done.
In a list of my 10 favourite cars there is always a Big Citroen, something exotic like a Lambo, the Rolls Phantom, a McLaren and a Metro.

I don't like them enough to want one (Well, maybe a MK2 VP with 'corrected' suspension or a 1.4GS) but having had a very quick spin in a Metro I understand the appeal. Feels like everyone says a Mini does.

My choice would be a mk2 MG Metro 1300 (NASP) but insurance and high prices of the cars preclude.

Thats why I did'nt offer you my Red Mk2.
It's not quite finished yet, and insurance wise for a younger driver is only financially viable with limited mileage, and various security systems fitted.
Although for those who like a bit of go-cart fun, I may yet be persuaded to part with one of my Mk2 Turbo's

That's the same for just about anything in fairness Mal. It cost over £300 LESS for me to insure my 2.0 Montego myself than to add me to my mother's 306. If I'd gone for unlimited mileage, though, it would still have been cheaper.

Not exactly Sam,
I know of plenty younger drivers who can insure a Monty or Maestro 1.6 / 2.0 cheaper than they can an MG Metro.
A also know of 2 19 year olds who can insure a mid spec 820 for less.
Even later High spec Rover Metro's are cheaper for younger drivers than the MG version.
Mal.

I can imagine a young lad in his VDP Metro picking up his girlfriend proudly stating he's "got wood". A slap may ensue

Wish I'd thought of that when I had one. A VDP that is.BlueRover wrote:I can imagine a young lad in his VDP Metro picking up his girlfriend proudly stating he's "got wood". A slap may ensue

My sister had an MG Metro brand new back in the day, absolute sh*te, leaked into and from every orifice and had numerous faults, it went back and she bought a Nova instead, which stayed in the family for quite a few years with no significant problems.
You would hope that any surviving now would have been fully sorted.

Mal.
I wasn't questioning that Mal - the MG badge has a lot to answer for!
What I was trying to point out is that when you say that it's only really viable to insure an MG Metro on a limited miles policy at a young age, you could quite easily have said the same thing about any car. I'm paying £783 to insure my Montego - doubtless I'd be looking at over a grand for a comparable MG Metro policy, but had I gone down the more usual 'Meerkat' route I'd be looking at the thick end of £4000 because I'm 20 and male. Same goes for just about anything I can think of - it only becomes fiscally viable for the young when the miles are limited.
@BlueRover; a mate of mine may have tried that line with his Montego Mayfair! Didn't end well...

Re: Ooops! I did it again (22k miles R100): now Rich M's car
I ran the numbers through Confused and GoCompare - with Hannah registered as owner and policy holder, aged 17 and her licence held for just 4 months (hypothetical near-worst case scenario) they wanted almost spot on £1000 for Comprehensive cover. I reckon that's pretty good going as these things stand. If she'd had her licence for 12 months but still got zero NCB that drops to about £750 and a year's NCB brings it down to £680. Looks like it was a good choice.
Oddly, if I insured it for me or Phillippa with Hannah as a named driver then the numbers are about the same but she would get no NCB building up so there's no value in doing it that way. Without Hannah it would be about £150, of course

Try it with classic car insurers. You might be pleasantly surprised.
