Do you mean the "official" Rover 800 Club Simon?

I had a similar comment from someone who did turn up thinking it was a club-supported event wearing a "Rover 800 Club" Polo shirt (uncannily similar to the "Rover 800.info" Polo shirts that Kate commissioned some years back) and who hadn't been able to get on the Rover 800 stand because they had booked too late.

It transpired he was in the Rover 800 Club and made similar comments.
Cheers,
Dave

Some owners clubs seem to be run more for the benefit of the "management" than the members, as ego trips. The Metro Owners Club is the complete opposite of the 800 club - the club is friendly and helpful and the members (including a surprisingly high number of people who are younger than their cars!) are massively enthusiastic.

The Metro world is in good hands but I wish I could say the same about the 800 Owners Club

Sad but true from the look of things Richard!

Had many times was it talked about before and it never happened.

As far as I am concerned it works, I pay £16 a year and that saves me £40-50 on my insurance, so I am happy. Don't use for the club for anything else thou, which is my choice, but it's a shame for those that want to go to shows as they only seem interested in the NEC show.

Had a message recently to say they want to merge with the Montego and Maestro club.

I'm glad it works for you Simon - do you have to provide a club membership number to claim your discount on insurance?
I've found that the simple fact i'm on here (and likewise with the Volvo forum, that has a "two-tier" system, those that want to join the club can and pay extra for certain privileges, those that don't can still get insurance discount as "unsubscribed club members") is usually enough for the insurers to tick the "Club Member" box and give me the discount.

Most of us don't have the time to attend the NEC whether we want to or not and from what i've seen of it (reports in Practical Classics, a couple on here etc) there wouldn't be the room for a couple of dozen 800s in there with everything else. That means the average man in the street who owns an 800 doesn't get a chance to show their car whether it's a concours trailer queen or battle-scarred daily driver.

Conversely that means the same few cars will be shown at the NEC year on year, which the public will soon get bored with and won't do the public profile of the 800 any favours in the long term.

As for merging with the Maestro & Montego Owners Club, the Maestro and Montego were both 80s products from the same manufacturer and all 3 cars are FWD - aside from the shared 2.0 powerplant (including its derivative forms) they don't have much else in common. It would be a better idea to merge with the SD1 club, at least they were the predecessor of the 800 and many that own an 800 now have also owned at least one SD1 so would be more of a natural progression.
Cheers,
Dave

Sounds to me they're after someone to do the work for them?

I was always put off from the NEC due to cost. With hotel costs etc it was expensive imo.

I always thought cars in the park was the best show as a group/site that I went to.

The same thought crossed my mind Chris. Many reports i've heard about this new club have basically said that it takes ages for anything to happen and when it does, it's very lack-lustre. In fairness, those comments were when it first started up so could have been "teething troubles" although the guy i spoke to on sunday at Peterborough implied nothing much had changed.

The NEC is an expensive venue for most people to visit - as you say, hotel costs, taxis to/from the place because you have to leave your car there and so on.
Then there are other "hidden" costs for a lot of people attending - those with pets for example that would have to pay someone to look after their pets for the weekend or other similar consideration.

I've not been to cars in the park so can't really comment as i don't know the costs involved or whatever (i did look into the NEC costs a few years back) or more importantly the venue as i've not seen it.
Cheers,
Dave

The SD1 club discussed becoming the SD1 and 800 club but decided that our cars weren't proper Rovers.

The Rover Sports Register are a good bunch who like the 800

Having owned both, the 800 is as worthy of being a Rover as the SD1 ever was.
