How old for Classic Insurance?

Post by zcar12 » Thu Nov 17, 2016 12:10 pm

Recently looked into getting a Rover 600 1999 that caught my eye and the insurance quote was double what I pay on my 92 820Si. Is this because a car must be over 20 years old before it qualifies for classic insurance?

yes it has to be 20 years. However I was quoted my then current insurer for renewal on the 98 Vitesse of £247 fully comp with 15 yrs NCD and limited mileage which is an increase of £30 from last year.

Internet search from meerkat has now got me same deal for £142.08 with a company Right Choice Ins Brokers In Romford

My coupe is not 20 years old, but I was able to get a classic policy, with agreed value.

Thank you gentlemen, much appreciated. £!42.08 for a Vittesse sounds like a very good deal to me. At the moment, my comprehensive policy with Saga costs me £141 with windscreen cover (75 Excess) roadside assistance and protected NCB. Mileage 3000 per year. 1992 820Si.

I recently got a decent (for me) classic car quote from Lancaster Classic Insurance. There is scope for agreed valuation with this.
Similarly, Adrian Flux seemed open to the car and the fact the coupe has slight mods.

There is now an argument in print that the 800 is a classic, it has made the "Practical Classics Top 100 Classic Cars" in the December 2016 issue (on sale now) but sadly they recommend the KV6 powered cars! That said it's good news all round as the KV6 was only in the later cars and they haven't made a distinction between the "povo-spec" and Sterling/Vitesse/coupé versions so any 800 is a classic according to one of the best known and respected classic car mags.

I know from Dusan that he has both his 800s insured with Adrian Flux and they view any 800 as being worth at least £2k, especially if there are modifications.

Something i have found during my years of car ownership is while one company may be particularly good on premiums for people in one area, another company is often better for others in a different area. As such it does pay to shop around, even confused and meerkat and similar search engines are getting in on the classic act now so it's often worth trying them first before spending hours on the phone. :D
Cheers,
Dave
