The biggest risk to the cam belt is the first start after a long lay up. In that case you could probably skip a lot of what i suggested but get it running so you know what you're dealing with.

If the engine and box seem good that's one (or two!) things less to sort out in the restoration, if that's the route you take.
I'll approach with caution.

Probably going to be about £2ks worth of welding from what you've said, plus doors, bonnet etc and a respray to make it how it should be. Once done, if it's right then it should be worth a lot of money, i know one member on here has a Mk1 with an agreed value of £10k on the insurance.

All stuff to consider, whichever way you jump with it! :D
2k worth welding; in that case I'll have to sit on this car for sometime before I can save that amount..unless I learn to weld and buy a welder which I've dabbled in once before at college.

Doing it yourself would be the most cost effective way. It would also mean that if you discovered more welding that needs doing, the bill wouldn't suddenly double! :D

You'll be a pro welder by the time you get to the end of that!

One bonus is it's not like you could make it worse.

Is the Trip Computer separate from the VCM or is it built in to the same unit? I can't remember, been a long time since i had one!

Yes separate but looks one whole unit. Good I have this spare, I noticed the LED clock display in the car has gone bad blistered.

I've already made space for the trip computer in the coupe. The hazard light and dimmer switches are relocated where the ashtray was. I found the housing for the switches on eBay recently - brand new oe spec (for lesser models)

I plan to put the cigar lighter on one side of the transmission tunnel near the heated seat switch; probably on the passenger side.

Do you use the cigar lighter purely to power USB powered devices Charles?

That's a way round it! :D

It would have been for show or for the sake of having it. I've already got two USB inputs. One in the stereo and the other coming out the side of the console into the passenger footwell.
I've got a Rover cigar lighter wired in the back where the blanking plate for this was on all these Mk2s.

This is what i've got in the rear ashtray Charles :

Image

Same lighter as the front one :

Image

I haven't yet got a night time pic of it in the car but it looks good in there. I've also got the USB socket i designed and built myself into one of the spare button housings in the switch panel to the right of the instruments :

Image

I'm also going to order a hidden USB for things like the dashcam and Bluetooth handsfree FM transmitter. Seems these days you need USB sockets everywhere in the car!

Dave

:) Looking good Dave. Strangely enough, every 800 I've had; this small bulb has never worked. I've never seen one lit up and until I saw your picture, I had quite forgotten this bulb was within.

Thanks Charles - funnily enough the bulb didn't work in my original set-up and only worked when i bench-tested it!

As you can see, i replaced the OE lighter sockets with new ones with blue plastic bezels and replaced that bulb with a blue LED in each for extra "blueness". :D

Dave

Thanks! I've just finished a rear indicator conversion as well - video will be revealed in a day or three on my Galactic Dawn thread - worth a view i reckon! :D

I familiarised myself with the workshop diagram for the trip computer - Thanks Dave! This afternoon, I made a start dismantling the console (which hides a mess of wiring for a moss burglar alarm). :(
I'm thinking the best way to access the wiring easily is to take everything out; the transmission tunnel, the seats and the carpet.
The only thing today was I didn't have my sockets with me to do this. But tbh I'm not really sure where I should properly start first. I also just discovered 'droppings' on the passenger footwell  and the roof has a bigger hole in the corner by the windscreen which I hadn't noticed on the last visit.

Do i take it from the dismemberment of the interior you've decided what to do with it Charles?
