... how many left - 820 Vitesse Coupe

Post by markyd68a » Tue Jan 31, 2012 8:55 am

Have you seen the website howmanyleft.co.uk its part of the DVLA and shows how many cars are still registered, the model names for Rover 820 coupé vitesse are a little all over the shop but would indicate that there are lest than a hundred 820 coupé's left in the UK ... sad!

I was confused by various descriptions on the website as I don't think all all cars were called the same (if you know what I mean) so I checked my logbook to see what it said and it is an 820 Vitesse ... no reference to body type which is on a different line.

http://howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/rover_820_vitesse

So that means at the end of Q3 2011 there were just 280 820 Vitesse's left ... Saloons & Coupé's I guess!

Impossible to tell I'm afraid, from January 1996 Rover 820 Vitesse had all body styles lumped together, saloon, fastback and coupe, conversely the same with 820 Sterling, could be saloon, fastback or coupe. Only 827 coupes had a seperate code of their own.
So the only way to find out would be to write to the DVLA and specifically ask by chassis code, so if you wanted 820 Vitesse Coupe you would ask for how many Rover 820's registered with the chassis codes SARRS CCVG AM, SARRS CCVG WM and SARRS CCVG XM. The answer you receive would probably be one of two, either you'll be directed to How Many Left, or you'll get the "sorry that request would cost more than £600 to research and so we cant give you the answer"

What I can you is that Coupe build (all models 827,825 and 820) was relatively small to start with, I'll have a breakdown of the database and see what figures for new builds I can come up with for the coupe derivatives

Of the numbers of cars left, I am pretty sure that percentage wise, the 827 Manual Coupe has the highest survival rate. IIRC, only 62 Honda 827 Manuals and 25 KV6 Manuals were ever produced. And I know of 3 that were/are on here. One of which is in my garage having LOTS AND LOTS of loving care put into it. :)

I did spend so long looking for the right one too.

I too would have liked to have known the answer to this but as dollysprint said we will probably never know. The 820 Vitesse Coupe had a very short production run of 20 months(2.1.97- 1.9.98) I have seen someone on the internet making a claim that only 920 Vitesse Coupes were built with approx. 50% of these being LHD and going to the German and Italian markets. I once did a very rough ( very very rough) calculation as to how many were built. I first took the production numbers for the build period, then divided it by four( four being that one in 4 cars built was a coupe " a BMW quote") then divided it by three ( kv6/ 2.0 and 2.0 turbo) if I remember correctly the figure came out at approx. 1100 Vitesse Coupes. May be dollysprint can shed more light on Coupe build numbers.

In addition to this I have kept for the last two years a tally of the number of Vitesse Coupes that pop up on the internet either for sale / spare or repair or scrapped. I have a tally of 106 runners, some of these may be SORN like mine.

If approximately 500 RHD Vitesse Coupes were built then the survival rate for Vitesse Coupes is looking good!

Going by the database the Coupe build numbers come out as per the table below. You will also see another table which basically comes from my memory. Allow me to explain, from 1993 until summer 2000 I worked for Rover Swindon in panel dispatch. Basically the logistics of getting panels from Swindon to Cowley, Longbridge, Solihull and the Jag and Rolls Royce plants. Where Cowley was concerned everything went by Road and the weekly dispatch for R17 Coupe Monosides was 2 left monosides and one right, the following week would be 2 right hand and one left. When I say 1 or 2 monosides I mean pallets of, and each pallet held 15 panels. So in 2 weeks Cowley would receive enough Coupe Monosides to build 45 cars, or 90 a month, or 1080 cars per annum. Coupes were in production from March 1992 until October 1998, a total of 79 months, therefore 79 months times 90 cars a month equals 7110 cars built. However there were times when extra pallets would be sent, not often but it did happen plus I arrived in 1993, over 12 months after Coupe production started, and I have no way of knowing if Coupe production was higher in the initial 12 months. Common sense would suggest it was. Conversely for 2 months of the year( August and December) production was effectively only 2 weeks long due to shut downs( holidays). However overtime before and after seemed to level this out in general.
The percentage taken from the database, (now 2000 cars) would suggest that some 10500 Coupes were built or 8.5% of the build total. But I think the desirability of the Coupe, and therefore the will to keep it on the road, whereas a saloon or fastback may have been scrapped, does distort the figures. On to the tables.

Coupes built 10505
27% were 2.0 litre cars, or 2836
26% were 2.5 KV6 cars, or 2731
47% were 2.7 V6 cars, or 4937

Of the 2.0 litre cars 66% were Vitesse's or 1871
The 2.0 litre Coupe was produced from January 1996 until October 1998 with Italy being the biggest market due to their tax laws, with 600 2.0 litre Coupes being sold there in 1996 alone supposedly.
The remaining 965 2.0 litre cars were Sterling spec, of these 11% were manual, some 106 cars, leaving 859 Sterling autos.

Of the KV6 cars only 12% were manuals, or some 327 cars according to the percentages

Of the 2.7 Honda engined Coupes the percentages suggest 20% or some 987 cars were manual. Now I know this contradicts the 65 that is banded about, but remember that 65 is UK only cars, not world market. Also I have 17 manual 2.7 coupes on the database, which is a high proportion if there was only 65 to begin with. But again desirability may be playing its part here.

Just for interest the last known Coupe Vitesse on the database has a chassis number of SARRSCCVGXM2607**, was built in October 1998, registered in January 1999 and is Blue.

Second table using my memeory figures.

Coupe build total 7500
27% were 2.0 litre cars or 2025 cars
26% were 2.5 KV6 cars or 1950 cars
47% were 2.7 V6 cars or 3525 cars

This would give 1336 Vitesses and 689 Sterlings, of which 76 would be manual
KV6 manuals would come out at 234
2.7 manuals would come out at 705

Dave,

Thanks for sharing this information with us. So the number of Vitesse Coupes built is actually higher than previously thought. Of the 1871 Vitesse Coupes built is it possible to break it down between RHD and LHD?

I'm afraid not, my VRN only recognises UK registrations, also in the chassis codes the Left hand drive transmission letter would be different. So for example instead of CCVG in the middle of the code it would be CCV?, the question mark being what ever letter Rover used to define PG1 Torsen diff left hand drive. Given that in one year alone Italy bought 600 2.0 litre Coupes and the car was in production for almost 3 years and exported to other market also, its a pretty safe bet that Uk 2.0 litre model sales were small, stab in the dark would be maybe 800 of both specs, Sterling and Vitesse.
Dont know if any Europeans on this site could confirm popularity or rarity either way?
Remember there are 2 sets of figures above, I suspect the actual build total lays somewhere in the middle.

dave, it doesnt make sense to me.

On one line you say 705 manual 2.7 coupés, then you say 76.

76 Sounds more liek it to me.

Or am i missing something???

Phil you're confusing the figures between 2.7 and 2.0 cars, maybe its the way I laid it out.
76 would be the number of Manual 2.0 Sterling Coupes out of a build of 689 Sterling 2.0 litre cars
705 would be the number of Manual 2.7 827 Coupes out of a build of 3525 cars.

So if the 65 Uk spec 2.7 manual spec Coupes is correct, and I'm not saying its not either way, then 640 manual 2.7 Coupes were exported and left hand drive, except Japan.

The Coupe build figures are the least reliable of all, because the database is actual cars, desirability may be distorting the figures which is why I think 10505 Coupes built is too high.

Also I have 17 manual 2.7's on the database which when multiplied up by the percentage would give 1235 UK manual 827's built, which I dont believe either.

So all these figures have to be viewed with some suspicion, particularly with the Coupe. But in the absence of Rover and Gaydon not wanting to come out to play, thats if they have the figures, this is the best we can get at the present time.

The Heritage Centre don't have 800 build records neither do BMW as I have spoken to both of them. I understand that these guy's might have them but they have ignored every email I have sent them. Take a look at their web site. I was directed to them by BMW:-

Yeah I have their site on my computer, just in case any customer ever needed an EKA code for their vehicle, however there is a guy in Norfolk who is cheaper and friendlier so I have never used MGRCC services, not even sure they are still trading to be honest. They are also in it for the money rather than love of the marque so whether they could be persuaded to use their computer to throw up every SARR or SAXX chassis code they have is debateable. Ignoring your emails I would say not or like I say they no longer trade. One of our problems is we are not a recognised club which in this instance I think leaves doors closed for us as opposed to say a Triumph TR Club or an MG Owners Club. And of course when those clubs asked for their figures Rover was still a going concern and heavily supported their Heritage via Gaydon and BMH.

I've seen some saloons registered as Coupes by Rover/DVLA

Yeah agreed Richard, that could put "How many left" way off, I only use registration and therefore chassis numbers, dvla are only used for colour and registration date.Even so my figures whilst interesting can only ever be used as a guide and as said Coupes are the worst of all, especially post 96.
