I wouldn't want a current shape Jag. Possibly an older XJ6 from around 1995 but the current cars just don't do it for me. I genuinely and honestly would prefer a Skoda, Kia or Seat.

Fair Play - these lower end cars are actually very decently built by modern standards and Kia for example do a 7 year warranty, so that's a no brainer.Very Tall Brad wrote:I wouldn't want a current shape Jag. I'm put off Skoda (and by association Seat) by the dealers - the lovely, friendly, couldn't do enough for the customer family run dealer we bought the Fabia from was binned by VAG because they didn't fit the profile - and the dealer that picked up the franchise was appalling. They had a big new glitzy showroom, which was important for VAG. Went bust a few years later.

The S-type is surprisingly tight for head and legroom - much more restrictive than the XJ40 and its derivatives.Very Tall Brad wrote:I wouldn't want a current shape Jag. I am very impressed by Kia's offerings - even the cheap and cheerful Soul is well screwed together and ours is 3 years old and has only ever had routine servicing (plus one recall for brake light switches).

Had a play with a Honda CRZ Hybrid Coupe yesterday in white. It has futuristic styling inside and out - multifunction digital dashboard. A 1.5 petrol motor with electronic motor which gets around 45 mpg in normal driving. A nice touch is the needle on the rev counter spins round when the ignition is turned on. It has normal, sport and eco driving mode and the colour of the instruments change colour for the particular mode and LED driving lights which stay on with the ignition on. It also has USB and AUX plugins. I would say the only detrimental points about the car are that the rear screen has reduced visibility with the squared off hatch, rear seat room is for small kids, and that the dash might take getting used to, but it is quite logically simple for information purpose.

Re: Chat about cars you've been in lately
Was doing a bit of valeting at a Honda Specialist used Car dealer in Ilkley yesterday, and was asked to pick up a Honda Jazz on a 62 plate from the main dealer in Halifax W Yorks. After waiting about 10 mins, I was given the keys and the logbook to a bright blue manual 5 door model.
First impressions were that it is quite wide and tall on the outside (more so than the previous generation). Getting in the driver seat revealed the dashboard layout to be much like the CRZ which I looked at a couple of months ago. I set off with caution from Halifax (I don’t think I’ve driven such a new car with 6000 miles on the clock) past the famous Piece Hall toward Bronte Country and on to Keighley.
The Hour long journey was not that exiting because the radio refused to work so instead was given the dead silence of the engine to listen to. I don’t know what litre of engine, but stepping out of the 827 revealed that this jazz didn’t have the guts I hoped.
The windscreen gradually steamed up so I put on the very powerful and effective demister which cleared the mist in seconds, so 10 out of 10 for that. Gear changing was snickerty smooth and a useful eco dashboard light appears when driving frugally.
Brakes were very good, but lack of use caused a faint squealing. I was not enamoured with the steering which had no particular feel to it, reminding me of the set up on my 827. The last thing to note was that the A pillars are so thick, making it an uneasy task to see around corners on the high up and narrow winding roads of old. Useful features include an AUX and USB inputs.
So altogether I would give the UK built Jazz an 8 out of 10 effort; a likeable small car for any person of any age group.

Vauxhall Meriva on a 13 plate as a rental to go from Bristol to Sheffield and back for a meeting (3 up).
MPV, quite roomy.
Likes - goes well enough, not thirsty, brakes, quite comfy, uncluttered dash (for a new car), audio, rear suicide doors, looks ok outside (nice colour).
Dislikes - vague gearbox, el cheapo plastic interior, not many cupholders for a new car, noisy inside.
I used to describe the button parking brake as hateful - I've warmed to it now, but still don't see the point.

Re: Chat about cars you've been in lately
Took one of the Vel Satis to London and back to Birmingham today. Nothing to report other than it was smooooth, silent and very brisk. No radio (code lost) but who needs it with 270 bhp Nissan 350Z power and a VTB reprogrammed tiptronic style fuzzy logic 5 speed auto? Oh and 30 mpg but mainly Motorways.

Rental Insignia on a 12 plate. 2.0 diesel with 24k.
Likes - DAB radio so I could listen to Planet Rock, just about comfortable enough for nearly 3 hours of driving, went well, 52mpg, crisp steering.
Dislikes - can't see a fecking thing out the back, gearbox a bit vague (but it's a rental), visibility, looks exactly the same as my BILs Toyota, headrests you can't rest your head on, plasticky dull interior. Did I mention you can't see anything out the back? Or the sides. Stupid little windows. And the ride was a bit... bouncy.
Now I've got used to them I'm now indifferent to pushbutton brakes as opposed to disliking - although I couldn't see the light to tell you it was on as the steering wheel was in the way.

Re: Chat about cars you've been in lately
The poor visibility of modern cars is shocking. The whole focus of the manufacturer is on passive safety (airbags, crumple zones, more airbag, seatbelt tensioners, door beams, more airbags etc) and very little on active safety (not getting into the fecking accident in the first place!).
My Chrysler Voyager and old Jeeps have excellent visibility and that helps me to avoid the idiots who don't/can't look where they're going. My S-type is like driving wearing a burkha.

I feel the same when I drive our 75, especially compared to my coupe.

Re: Chat about cars you've been in lately
If I was in the market for a new car it would probably be one of those high up jobs that have a view. Modern saloons and hatches seem to have adopted 95% door, 5% glass, it's like being in an armoured car and is quite oppressive.

Poverty spec Astra rental from Budget in Dublin. Utterly forgettable. Stained seats are disappointing, probably won't use Budget again.

Re: Chat about cars you've been in lately
I'd say that's more to do with Budget than the Astra. I rented one here in the UK, got upgraded to a Design spec 160bhp CDTi. Wonderful machine, scary to think it has more power than a Fiat Coupe! I even got used to the electronic handbrake.
As for visibility I am currently driving a 1989 Rover 214. I cannot get over how light and airy it is. Visibility is A1.
