Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
I did some more tinkering over the easter weekend. My aim was to sort the brakes, as i have now collected the majority of the parts. However i got side tracked but other things.
First off i lost half of Saturday morning going to look at a potential donor car on ebay. Steve (Rovercoup) spotted it on ebay and sent me a message. It was an 820 fastback in rough shape, no MOT etc, but apparently had good doors and wings, so i figured it was worth a look. Unfortunately only the front wings and 1 door was good, the rest were rusty and no better than mine. Despite having the same paint code the colour also appeared a fair bit darker which was strange. Anyway i dint bid on it and it sold for £260ish which makes my mot'd 827 seem cheap at £565.
So i ambled back through the countryside from Worthing back to Kent, and stopped to get a few photos in the sun.
Back home i started tackling more unsightly stuff. My windscreen finisher had a few tiny bubbles, which on closer inspection turned into holes. This thing it too thin for me to weld without blowing holes, so i just ground it back, treated it with Bilthamber Deox Gel and then Hydrate 80. Once that had done its stuff, i fillered it, then red oxide and satin black. Its not a perfect repair by any means, but will slow the progress of the rust until i find a decent replacement panel.
While that was off i investigated why my wipers go off the edge of the windscreen. I was expecting to find excess wear in the linkage, but it turned out to be the wiper motor mountings having loosened, allowing the motor to move on its bracket. With that tightened up, its much better. There is still some slop in the system, but they work better now. Strangely they don't ever end up sitting on their rest pedestals, so something isn't quite properly adjusted?
The cabin heater hasn't been working. The valve that directs the hot water to the blower is controlled by a small vacuum tube. I could feel the tube pulling or not depending what i did with the levers in the car so i concluded, along with suggestions from others that the valve had stuck. Kind of to be expected as the car had sad for a long time not being used much. I pulled the valve out and sure enough the piston was stuck. I freed it off and put it back in the car. It works now but only intermittently so i think i need a replacement valve.
Whilst under the scuttle area i made a repair to the servo cover. Most of it was ok, but one bit was pretty frilly so a bit of chopping welding drilling and painting i put it all back together.
Last thing i jacked the rear of the car up to see how the rear calipers looked. Whilst under there i realised that the filler neck is seriously crusty, so ive ordered a re manufactured item off ebay. Expensive but ive read trying to find a good second hand item is pretty difficult.

Nice work indeed. The replacement filler tubes look good - how much?

That much Mark!!! I used a stainless steel boat deck filler and marine fuel hose to link to the bottom (good) part of my existing filler - worked out about £70 all in and it'll never rot!
Each to their own and if i was going for a concourse restoration then i would almost certainly use one of the ebay items. I think somewhere on here is a thread where they're offered for £160 but i may be wrong.

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
Great work James in short time too. I have a spare windscreen scuttle that is in good nick that id be happy to sell you and could bring it along to Gaydon if your going. On your wipers it may be just the angle of the photo but it looks as if the driver and passenger are round the wrong way? like I said it could just be angle of photo.

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
Yes I thought the wiper arm angles looked a bit funny too...
The filler pipes are pricey but they look quality. Anyone remember the OEM price? Well done James for caring enough to splash out for the proper thing I say.
Incidentally, I have had both of my cars' filler pipes rubber coated to hopefully protect the metal. Think it cost around 100 pounds each but hopefully it'll mean they never rot. My garage sent them away for me to be done by a firm specialist firm.

I had a look on Rimmers only to find they're NLA but found a part number and searched that :mjc9967 wrote:

WLP10239-£147.70+VAT
Click the part number/price to go to the thread on mg-rover from about 2007, either way the price of this remanufactured unit is similar to the price of a new OEM unit.

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
That's great Steve, thanks.
I'm interested to see what the new filler neck is like, as it doesn't have beaded ends to any of the pipes. It should be ok as none of these connectors are under high pressure.

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
It looks to be a quality made part James and should serve you well. If it was me buying a new one I would probably give it some more protective coating before fitting to the car just to make sure you keep corrosion at bay.
