Re: Alucard7002 - 1997 Mk2b 820 Vitesse Fastback - Pewter Grey
It begs the question - why did Rover go down this strange way of doing it? They must have known people would "play" and find ways round their system and also somewhere along the way the solenoid would fail although that would be built-in obsolescence of that part forcing the purchase of an over-priced part to keep the car on the road.
I suppose reduced lag and improved throttle response would be one benefit to this system and also the reduced boost under certain conditions/parameters would be advantageous (engine braking for example) but i think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
If they'd left the boost at 7.5psi (i seem to recall that was maximum boost of the Mk1 820 Turbo) and used a stepper motor to increase the pre-load on the wastegate spring to increase the boost or even reduced the 7.5 to 5psi and run slightly higher compression, turbo lag would be greatly reduced, overall control would be smoother and low end torque better. In fact that gives me an idea for a certain persons K18 to T-series perversion - or should that be conversion?

I think some modern turbo engines have a electric actuator directly operating the wastegate (or the new fangled variable geometry control). This has got to better from an engine control point of view, but I still wonder about the high temperatures and problems of seizure, etc.
The D5 in my volvo uses a similar system to the Rover and the valve is a common failure point - mostly due to it clogging with crud - not from the engine as it is driven from a vacuum pump, but from the air drawn in from the atmosphere by the vacuum system and filtered only by a mesh screen!

Er, sorry Dusan, I think this thread was supposed to be about your car!

At least it's not as bad as the usual thread-drift" that happens on here - we're still on the subject of turbo wastegates/boost control!traineefarmer wrote:Er, sorry Dusan, I think this thread was supposed to be about your car!

Jeez, that engine is worse than i rememebr! Clearly see the valve to piston matks on #1, 2&3 melted and the damage to #4!
I#m still amazed you got from Blackpoo to 3 miles noth of Leyland (got to be some irony in there!) before it resigned to terminal filaure!
If you cancel out the crank tooth jump. that's 2 on 1 cam pulley and 1 on the other!

I'm not is I've missed something here, but all turbo engines had cutaways for the inlet valves on the pistons.

You can see the cut outs Tom, you're right but it did have bent valves! Can't remember if Dusan got a shot of them but it was #1 inlet valves.

Re: Alucard7002 - 1997 Mk2b 820 Vitesse Fastback - Pewter Grey
No photo of bent valves but within the fly cuts on the piston for valve clearance you could see a slight shiny ring on #1 and less obvious on 2&3.
It is amazing I did 40 odd miles on such a buggered engine before it puked all of it's oil out of every orifice.
Had I hooked up a life support IV of oil into the engine I could have gone on indefinitely I think

I had briefly considered getting another Vitty however the head prevailed over the heart and I've decided to retire from 800's for daily use.
I had hoped to nurse my 820 another 50k/5 years and then retire it but after that one ate it's Diff bearings I'm looking at a more modern replacement.
Currently I'm pretty set on a Subaru Outback Wagon in 3l H6 Auto guise.
Alternatives are Mundano Wagon 3l V6 Auto or Volvo T5 AWD Wagon Auto
