Rover 827 lower camshaft cover

Post by SEGUBJO » Wed Aug 29, 2018 9:23 am

Hi there !

Does anyone know how you get the lower camshaft cover away from the Engine.
I have taken out all 8 bolts and the cower can be moved sideways, but when I move it up the cambelt tensioner bolt is in the way and probably also something else.

Can I take the cambelt tensioner bolt out before removing the cover?

Any tips?

Cheers
Gunnar

I'm guessing you mean the timing belt cover Gunnar? Silly question, is the crank pulley still attached?
Cheers,
Dave

Yes the pulley is off
The tensioner for the compressor is off
Do you think I need to remove the compressor or any other major item?
Cheers

I know when i did the cam belt on my Sterling, i had to move the compressor off its mountings and slide it over for some reason, can't remember why now. Managed to find the thread i did on it at the time, the compressor needs to be moved out of the way to get the cover off!

It's about halfway down in the first post, turns out not all 827s are the same, my Coupé which was a later car didn't have that problem!

It's nice to know my Sterling isn't the only one that has this odd feature but obviously not so nice for you! The compressor bolts are tricky to remove, don't let it dangle on the hose, use a jack, box or something to rest it on or tie it up out of the way once loose.

I'm glad you mentioned moving the compressor or i might not have remembered it, was 9 years ago now which probably means it needs doing sooner rather than later now!  :D
Cheers,
Dave

Probably too late now but..

You need to place a jack under the sump, jack it up until it contacts the sump then remove the left hand engine mount (2 bolts), loosen the single through bolt and swing the mount towards the wing, then jack the engine up until resistance is felt, should then be high enough to pull the cover out, no need to remove the compressor etc.

Maybe on earlier or perhaps later ones Andy but i think Gunnar has one the same as mine where it appears they did something strange with the A/C pipework, necessitating the removal and moving to one side of the compressor.

It's a right pain in the ar5e to be honest but thankfully on later cars they changed it and i had no problems doing my Coupé belt - have seen a late Mk1 where it needed something doing but i think the timing belt cover had been "modified" on that one to prevent the need for the engine mount moving. :D

Ah yeah, the AC pipe running near the header tank.

On my MK1 Sterling the AC didn't get in the way.
