Jeep talk

Post by CHR15E » Sun Sep 16, 2018 3:40 pm

I still keep looking at 4x4s. My sensible head is looking at Nissan Xtrails.

My non sensible head is thinking a V8 Jeep.

Any opinions/knowledge on the Jeep 4.7 V8 engine? MPG seems to similar or even slightly better than the 4.0 engine so I may as well have a V8?

I had a WJ Grand Cherokee for a while - as long as that engine hasn't been overheated, they are great. I had no trouble getting parts here, not that it needed much other than a belt tensioner and a water pump.

Interestingly enough, I'm considering selling my 4L ZJ and getting another 4.7L WJ instead - they make much better road cars than ZJs.

Any obvious signs for one that's been overheated?

Not that many to choose from overhere. I'll be looking at WJs as I'd heard the same on being a better car.

I won't be using it daily unless it snows a lot over the winter.

We're still looking for a nearly new Astra estate as a daily car which we'll share. The Jeep will be for backup and used as a skip mainly.

Had enough of running a diesel, I miss being stupid. :D

Just had a quick look on fleabay Chris, a fair few Grand Cherokee V8s around, most have LPG conversions and several listings mention the heater output is good, one of them goes further to say this can be a problem if it isn't working right.

I've not had a V8 Cherokee so don't know how significant the heater output is in terms of faults but as a general thing, prices seemed to vary from a few grand down to a few hundred for the good, the bad and the "Damn, that's ugly!". :D

My neighbour had a Lexus RX450h and swapped for a new Grand Cherokee last year. He had it for a few months before he swapped for a Volvo XC90 T8. Apparently the Jeep wasnt really that nice compared to neither the Lexus nor the Volvo. But he was happy with it as it was ”a mans car”. Personally I prefer comfort and reliability.

Chris, it's just usual HG signs - mayo and overheating.

I'd forgotten the fact that heater air blend doors stick when the plastic pivot jams/shears. You can buy a "heater treater" to replace it - an easy enough fix going in from a hole cut in the side of the heater box. Quick and cheap to do (on an LHD car) - I did mine as a precaution, so it doesn't count as a fault in my book.

Nothing even relatively local I'm interested in though typically. Same story on Autotrader as well. 100+ miles as the crow flies.

It must be nice having the kind of money needed for cars like that.

Mine won't be a daily car so as long as it's not horrible it'll do. I did look at older XC70 T6 cars but the gearbox has a very bad reputation so that's a no. Plus I don't like the tailgate setup on them. It has the silly drop down like on a Range Rover which is no good if you're short like me.

I'll keep a look out as soon as one relatively local turns up.

Unless I do the usual trick of getting impatient and buy something else completely different.

Only the gearbox? Before i moved here, my neighbour had an XC70 D5 from new. Besides broken springs, blown engines and several other things, all under warranty (oh yeah, the rack died at some point too) which he had extended based on the experience with the previous one. That spat 3 gearboxes out in very short order apparently, the one he had when he moved in next door was the replacement (and an upgrade with certain extras) from Volvo.

Lurking as i do at times on the Volvo forum i sometimes have a look on the other sub-forums such as the XC70/90 section. Let's just say i wouldn't even think of owning one!
Cheers,
Dave

Well I finally found one at a sensible price. :D

It's a 52 plate as can be seen, 4.7 V8 High Output Overland. It's done 73K since new and as the pics show has been very well looked after. Only downside was the 260 mile round trip to fetch it.

Nothing of note to report yet, drove home fine. Just waiting for the snow now. :D

Nice looking Jeep Chris! Is it on LPG? I can't see a filler or switch on it.

No, no LPG. I'm not planning to use the car daily so chose one based on condition.

Plus LPG isn't cheap here, I seem to live in a black hole or something? :D

It can be got at a sensible price by travelling but I'm too lazy for that as all the cheaper stations aren't in places I regularly visit.

It's a while since i bought LPG seeing as i sold my Coupé a few months back but a quick look on FillLPG shows it's in the 60-70p/L range round my neck of the woods at the moment.

Looking at your location (as per what it says in the sidebar - J28, M1) not only are you in a black hole but the nearest places are all nudging 80p/L!!!

Based on how much unleaded is round here in comparison to LPG, you must be paying £1.60/L for unleaded i would think!

If you're not going to use it much, as you don't have anywhere close to you that sells it at a sensible price then it's probably not worth it. You'd use half of what you'd save just going to get gas!
Cheers,
Dave

Petrol and diesel are typical prices here. £1.30-1.40 depending what you want.

The local LPG station down the road knows people have got to travel so he has them by the balls.

It's a bit crap really, the cheaper places are a minimum of 15-20 miles away. Which is at least an hour's trip.

It would be nice if it cost less to run but it is what it is.

I think I might cover the fuel gauge up though, can't watch it go down then. :D

Nah, just run out on the hard shoulder instead!

There's a Shell station round my neck of the woods on the A11 that is always expensive, there's also an Esso opposite that are cheaper but for some reason the Shell seems to get noticed and used a lot more.

Just for fun, coming north on the A11, just before the roundabout the Shell and Esso are on is another petrol station, Fina or Total or something - that says it all i think because i've passed that loads of times but still not sure what it is! It's in the wrong place to be noticed as everyone is slowing down for the roundabout so they're paying attention to the road, not the petrol station.
Cheers,
Dave
