Got the 3 rods and plate to support the manifold almost finished, with them bolted up the whole assembly is solid, no flex at all.

3 rods altogether, one to support in each direction

When I removed the turbo I found the oil feed pipe partially clogged with solidified burnt oil, the oil was top quality and new so it must be the heat. After the engine has been working hard and the car stationary I have to leave it running for a few minutes to keep coolant circulating but I can still hear it boiling at the turbo and probably not circulating properly.
So I got a small electric water pump from a Mini turbo, the idea is to fit this directly to the turbo coolant return hose powered by an adapted turbo timer, wanted to fit it to the feed but different bore size means it might be a restriction on the feed side

Image

The bracket is a mix of cut up BMW Mini bracket cut down and welded to the Rover engine harness bracket

Image

It fits neatly on the end of the cylinder head close to the turbo

Image

As the new exhaust manifold is much taller than original I have to fit a heat shield to the bonnet. I hadnt noticed over the years it has a small patch of rust that needs fixing and the bonnet catches were corroding.

Image

Cleaned these up, was a bit tricky because they are designed not to come apart understandably for safety, but managed to remove the rust, treat and paint them ready to go back on.

Image

Next stainless steel parts for the strut brace are ready, hopefully my measurements are correct.

Couple more jobs today, these plain steel bolts secure the second fuel rail, they were just what happened to be to hand at the time and always bugged me being right on top of the engine so replaced them with some nice blue titanium

Image

much nicer and 2.2 grams lighter each

Image

Kept changing my mind about how to reduce the movement in the engine stabiliser, in the end had a pair of steel discs cut to replace the big flexible rubber bush, the small end I should have left the original bush fitted but to late now, instead found a pair of bump stop off cuts that will fit once cut to length.

Image

Discs welded in, I cheated a bit by not using any filler rod just making the weld pool from the two parts, I suspect this is not the ideal technique but the loads should not be on the welds. I tried to avoid the outer edge but could only manage it in a few areas needed a very steady hand and more skill than I have.

Image

I cut the centre rod to length before welding but maybe should have done it after, as welding messed the ends up.

Image

Lastly cut the bump stops to size, pressed them in and fitted a bar through the centre. Hopefully this will have just enough to reduce engine movement back and forward and still enough flex for the solid bolted end not to be over stressed.

Image

Updates all up to date, hope to have some more parts for the exhaust system this week, thanks
Jim

And when you’re finished you can pop over to me and help me out with the manual mk1 Vitesse! Beer, food and scotch on me! ;)

I must admit, that I am now tempted to fit an electric water pump into the circuit on my Jeep Grand Cherokee to run for a while after the engine shuts down. It already has an uprated Flowkooler pump for better flow when running, but can sometimes boil up after shutdown following some action in the desert.

If you're on about the 4.0 Richard, you could fit a 7/16" penny washer in the 'stat outlet - it works wonders to regulate the coolant flow and keep them running cooler!

Sounds counter-intuitive but it works. I used a home-made restrictor on mine and it improved things dramatically :

Loving the work updates on this, especially the bushes and the short-throw gear change.

Can I ask where else you post these threads? I just assume you must because there's no way I could do my write-ups that quick

It's on the V8 (5.2L). It's fine when running but when used hard in the desert it can getr a bit warm after shutdown due to the lack of flow and the hotspots in the engine (presumably the heads). The alternative is to let it idle for a few minutes before shutting down when we stop for a drinks break

Thanks for the positive comments it is much appreciated. I was posting on 3 sites but fell behind here, from now on I promise to post any updates here first as this is the true source of information for the Rover 800.
My website is a bit behind and only gets completed jobs updates so not the best place to see all the details and small jobs.
I started back on the exhaust system today but only got a couple of hours, hope to get back on it tomorrow and then update on progress, cheers again
Jim
