Exhaust front pipe and flexi MK1 sterling

Post by Dajazar » Fri Mar 22, 2019 6:27 pm

Hi all

Sterling MK1 has failed MOT on exhaust front pipe and flexi among other things.
Does anyone know where I can get on please.

New front wings getting done and inner sills and some other welding required. I have some pictures but they are on what's app and don't know how to share them

Your help is needed

Thanks and all the best

I seem to remember talk of front pipes being available on Amazon?

A local to me manufacturer was selling them. B&M Catalysts.

Adding pics on here is done using the add image to post link.

Very often, the best option is to get one custom made - ideally from stainless steel. The companies that do it may not be much more expensive than buying online

Thanks
The car not too bad.
You did a great job when you restored it and I Thank you for that. I will look on line as the back is now stainless steel so the front should be the same.
Cheers

If you can't find one Tracy, the long hole in the back end of the front pipe can be covered up using a split dog-food tin (or similar!) and Jubilee clips to make a wrap-around bandage - exhaust putty/paste to help seal is optional. It's fine for MoT as well.

On the flexi section, you can buy clamp-in replacement flexi sections and also exhaust clamps with hangers on them. This would get you out of a hole and give you time to either find a complete front pipe or somewhere to build a complete system.

There's a few listed on fleabay but they are all listed as fitting all models from 86-99 for the 827! Looking at the Klarius webcat, it seems there were 3 or 4 different front pipes fitted to the Mk1 827 so if you can let me know the year, i'll try to find the right one on fleabay for you. :D
Cheers,
Dave

Hi
The year of car is 1990
Thanks for your help that would be brilliant.
Other option is to have a bespoke one made in stainless steel.

Thanks Tracy, i forgot to ask - with or without cat?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-KLARIUS-O ... 1678152458

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROVER-827-RS ... 2450940264

Narrowed it down to those two, first is non-cat, second is with cat.

From past experience, you may well need these as well :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6x-Metric-Ex ... 2163068458

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Metric-Exhau ... eh0qPXN5Yw

First item, 6 off M10 x 1.25 x 39mm studs - these are the manifold studs where the downpipe fits. Second item, is M10 x 1.25 nuts for the studs, need at least 6 usually and their product code is BN9. I found on both my Coupe and Sterling the threads stripped on the studs and the uts weren't that much better! I also have the oddball sized taps (M10 x 1.25) for chasing out the threads in the manifolds.

Good luck whichever option you choose! Let us know how it goes. :D
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave

It's a non cat. It's seems strange that the non cat is more expensive than the cat one. But if that's what is takes I'll bite the bullet and get it with nuts extra.
The front wings come over from the US from Sterling fixer which went cheap because of import charges. However worth it.
Hubby is so in love with this car I'll get what takes to get it back on road..
It's not really bad when we bought it of Richard in 2010 not spent too much on it as Richard looked after it so well. We want to do same.
Thanks for your help will give update once done
Cheers

Ouch - the non-cat one is very expensive - annoyingly as Chris mentioned further up there were some going quite cheap recently but that was literally only for a day or two, i think someone listed the wrong price.

I'm wondering if it might be worth patching what you've got with a clamp-in flexi section and a dog food tin on the split further back while you save up for a stainless system.

The other alternative would be to buy the cat one and get your friendly local mechanic to extend it, that's the only real difference between the two as far as i remember.
Cheers,
Dave

Websites like Car Builder Solutions (https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/) who specialise in providing parts for kit car builders can supply things like flexi pipes in various sizes - I put one on my MGC's stainless exhaust.

https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/ ... ust-tubing

As for the Sterling - I was reasonably lucky with it when I got it from Brad, it needed recommissioning rather than restoring because it was in fairly good nick to begin with. Being non-cat is good for that extra few BHP compared to the cat equipped model. I'm glad that it's in good hands and providing good service

Thanks Richard for reminding me - i think this is the size i used on my front pipe (bear in mind mine is Mk2 cat though) and it lasted about 9 years :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exhaust-Clam ... 1250979223

The dog-food tins on mine needed replacing a couple of times in between but those patches lept the front pipe on mine going for many more years than it should have had!

You'll need to check the length and the ID needed on the pipe but gives you a starting point.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi all
Update on sterling
The wings are off awaiting fitting of replacement. All welding done and exhaust pipe ordered and ball joint. That's what 2as needed for MOT.

Can anyone recommend a sealant for the windscreen rubbers?
Found this is leaking.

Thanks for all your help and advice couldn't do it without you guys.

Thanks

Which "windscreen rubbers" do you mean Tracy? The 800 range has bonded windscreens so no rubber at all.

Do you by any chance mean the sunroof drain valves that are visible with the front wings removed? If so, where are they leaking? I have developed a fix that is permanent and solid and costs very little but if it's not that, don't want to explain it all for nothing! :P

Dave
