Re: Jeep talk
I've done a few jobs on the Jeep recently.
I've fitted a reverse camera and 4 channel screen. Mainly for one man hitching of my trailer. The extra channels are handy for the cameras in and on the trailer itself.
I have our caravan wired the same way too. Just got to add another 13 pin socket on the rear of the Jeep.
I've swapped the driver's door mirror glass as the auto dimming part has gone funny. Seems to be liquid in it?
I've swapped the stereo for a modern Bluetooth setup so means I have handsfree now which is useful.
Lastly I've fitted new struts on the tailgate glass as the others were very weak.
A stainless exhaust is next on the list when it arrives.

Re: Jeep talk
Good shout on replacing the door mirror glass Chris, from what i understand it's a common fault. Basically they're liquid crystal switchable tinits, a bit like an auto-darkening welding helmet but not as dark. You can buy the film on fleabay :
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_osac ... m&_sacat=0
That's the sort of idea it works on anyway.
Looking good all round though!

Re: Jeep talk
What better way to spend your birthday than fitting a stainless exhaust?
First impression is that at tickover it's actually a little quieter than the old one but it was advised that the old centre box was blowing sightly so not a fair comparison to stock.
Only been out for a quick spin so far, definitely a little throatier when booting it but also seems smoother when accelerating.
Bit of a faff getting the old stuff off, I suspect it was probably original so removing the box off the rear CAT wasn't easy without damaging the cat pipe.

Re: Jeep talk
Today mate, not finished yet.
I was hoping to fit some new speakers too but my other halfs gran has been ill so not had the time yet.
Next on the list is a proper service. I'm considering changing the diff oils along with the usual stuff.

Re: Jeep talk
Ah, three days after mine then!
You've got one nice soundtrack (V8 through a stainless system) so i daresay the speakers can wait a while.
If memory serves, the front and rear diffs use different oils as in a different additive to go in the back one depending what sort of LSD it has?

Re: Jeep talk
Offered a speaker up in the rear and it's rubbish. Seams newer speakers have much smaller footprints these days. The magnet is tiny to what I'd expect. The sound is terrible IMO so they'll be going back or sold.
The OE ones aren't faulty, just thought I'd update them.
AFAIK it has LSDs front and rear being an Overland.
Apparently it's a very sophisticated setup compared to older Jeeps.

Re: Jeep talk
I was always under the impression they didn't fit a front LSD as it could cause wind-up in the transmission front to back if the back also has LSD - perhaps that was for the XJ Cherokee and they found a way round it for the ZJ as i think yours is?
Modern speakers, like home hi-fis are a lot smaller, not so beefy and don't give such a good sound IMHO, you could probably find some that will do the job and fit properly but i guess you'll be paying £OUCH for them.

Re: Jeep talk
Mine's a WJ, ZJs were the previous Grand Cherokee.
I'm no expert on the system in mine but this video seems to explain it.

Re: Jeep talk
Ah, the QuadraTrac system. Not quite an LSD in the front but close, think it's a Tor-Sen diff in the front and a "traditional" LSD with the plates in the diff like clutch plates.
I think!
Not too familiar with the WJ to be honest and going on memory of when i looked into them something like 5-6 years ago before i got my XJ which i had over a year and sold when i got my Volvo which i've had nearly 3 years now.

Re: Jeep talk
A lot depends upon the type pf transfer box fitted.
XJ had a NP231 - selectable 2wd/4wd with 4wd only usable off road. Later models may have had the NP249 (see below)
Many lower spec ZJs will have been fitted with with NP242 (selectable 2wd/4wd which also includes a "full time" 4wd option for road use)
Other ZJs have an NP249 QuadraTrac- permanent 4wd using a viscous coupling for the output to the front. This always fails and causes binding - I fitted both of my ZJs with 242s instead of the original 249s
All the above have a selectable 2LO option as well
The WJ comes with one of two different types of transfer box depending upon engine size and vehicle age and spec. NV247 Quadra-Trac II sends 100% of torque to the rear until the rears start to slip then sends torque to the front axle via a georotor pump and clutch pack . I found this to be poor on sand because of the slight lag in powering up the front axle and it's one of the reasons why WJs are hardly ever seen on sand here (I had to drive in 4LO with the locked centre diff).
The other type is QuadraDrive II (NV245) which has a pukka centre diff and allows torque to go to the front axle, even on dry roads. I've no experience with these but expect them to be good because the front axle will be powered immediately/permanently.
In theory, any of these apart from NP249 will be OK with a front LSD but many later Jeeps such as the WK (3rd gen Grand Cherokee) have a pseudo LSD which works by applying brakes - which is not really what you want when trying to climb tall, soft sand dunes.
My ZJs have LSDs in the rear which require a "friction modifier" to be added to the SAE 80 or SAE 90 diff oil, and open front diffs which run on straight SAE 80 or SAE 90

Re: Jeep talk
Any experience on improving the ride/handling on a WJ Rich?
I'm using mine daily at the minute and it's starting to annoy me.
I've read reports on uprating the ARBs and shocks.
Trying to workout whether to spend on it or buy something else instead.

Re: Jeep talk
Have a look at this site Chris :
http://gojeep.willyshotrod.com/
Although mainly for the XJ Cherokee, it does have a few tips and tricks for later models and some will apply to all models as well.

Re: Jeep talk
I never did anything special on the WJ. I bought it with a 2" lift already fitted (spacers) and practically every rubber bush totally shot. New bushes, mostly poly bushes, helped.
ARB bushes and drop links always seem to be Jeep weak spots
