Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
Scary! You can see how the hole is not only enlarged but totally out of shape as well!

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
Left work a bit early on Friday to go to pick up sanding discs in Hull. Jumped back in TB2 and what's this? Key not turning ignition. Steering lock still on even when wiggled. After a few minutes, I noticed the end had snapped off the key. A bit about 5 mm. Bugger.
Walked to a key and locksmith nearby - "We don't do cars..."
Phoned Bobs Heel and Key bar - "Sure I can cut you one, just bring in the key to copy." Problem is, I don't have a complete key to copy...
I do have a spare at home, so I got the bus home and so my weekend of sorting the Missus MGF ready for re-test means I have to invent a tool or find a way to get the bit of key out. I might have to trailer it back if I don't succeed...
Arse!

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
Oh that's really bad luck. And you are sure the broken piece is still in the lock? If I had known this yesterday I could have examined the barrel as I had the steering wheel and plastic surround off the car to see if there was any way of getting in from behind.scotty2 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2019 12:17 pmLeft work a bit early on Friday to go to pick up sanding discs in Hull. Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
I have assumed the worst but just about to leave armed with:
Spare key.
Small drill bit, welding rod and Blu Tack.
Magnet.
Phone number of Auto Aid!
The way my luck has been recently I have to assume it is in there, but hey if the spare key works I just need to get another cut and have a pint on the way back!

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
Well,
That's not coming out with any of my improvised tools. The end is indeed stuck in.
TB2 back at base anyway now.
Auto Aid is the way to go!
I think Rimmers have lock sets so off shopping...
Kinnell, Might have to be second hand or from elsewhere! Showing about £200!
Have been given a number for a car locksmith by the recovery company so might try them too.

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
Sorry to hear all that, if you hang fire until tomorrow on ordering a lock set from Rimming Bors (as someone once called them! ) i think i have a steering lock including barrel and key - it's in my trailer though and i've just got back from the monthly ROver meet, was sitting awkwardly on the pub garden bench and my hip is now bouncing me off the ceiling in agony so i can't look until tomorrow.scotty2 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2019 4:57 pmWell,

Fairly sure RImmers only have Mk1 lock sets and they be different. SOrry it's a short message, wanted to get it posted before you hit the "BUY" button!

Super News Dave.
Thanks. I'll wait to hear. Have a look for the little panel that covers the side of the Air Con controls for TGM as well please.

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
I believe Ron at Best of British might have some new locks/key sets, worth a try?

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
Silly question and it may already have been asked - have you tried the other (intact) key or even the broken one to key if will actually rlease the steering lock?

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
What about the broken one, will that go in far enough with a slight wiggle to release the steering lock?

Re: Thunderbird 2 & The Green Machine
I managed a quick look today and think i could see the end of the steering column. Only problem is i've trapped a nerve in my back which is sending shooting pains from my right hip all down the right leg to the foot making it painful to stand on and it keeps going numb and giving out.scoobyh123 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2019 5:35 pmI've seen that recently and been meaning to mention it but i forgot! Wouldn't be so much of a problem but my left one has done similar for years so i'm somewhat beached at the moment!
Going to try a remedy tonight and hopfeully have normal movement again tomorrow!
