Lancaster insurance

Anyone with them?

I have a potential plan in mind and have had very cheap quotes with them.

Just wanted to see if anyone was using them and what they thought?

I've been with Lancaster for several years now Chris. Once in a while when i get a renewal through, i'll look at other quotes but to be honest, it usually ends up being cheaper with Lancaster or just not worth the hassle of changing - all the extra form filling, direct debit to set up, listening to the stilted recitation of the Direct Debit Guarantee by the only just post-pubescent illiterate on the other end of the phone who is only doing the job for the wage packet at the end of the week/month just to save a fiver on the policy.

I've thankfully never needed to claim so i can't vouch for how good/bad/indifferent they may be on that but for the rest, they're as good as any other.

If you've had a cheaper quote with them and the policy does everything you need it to then go for it, just be careful they don't sneakily bump it up next year like a lot of them seem to like doing.
Cheers,
Dave

They are generally well regard and backed by the MG Owner's Club. I use them for my MGC, very good on price.

Good to know.

I haven't made my mind up which way I'm going yet.

I've been getting quotes of £140-190 for a lot of early 90s cars.

The outcome of the ARB being fitted today will play a part in what I decide to do.

To my knowledge, The Rover 800 Owners Club are supported by Lancaster Insurance.
Also the Rover 800 YouTubeist (Hubnut) has his channel promoting Lancaster Insurance at the moment.

From personal experience I have found Lancasters quotes to be expensive for Comprehensive Cover with a high(ish) excess to pay.

I've been with Gogirl insurance for 11 months this month. Renewal is July.
At the moment I pay £288.96 a year with a £250.00 excess and 4 years no claims bonus.
I still feel this is expensive but all modifications for the Coupe are accounted for in the policy.
Just waiting to see what the renewal price will be in the next 1 to 3 weeks.

Get another quote with Lancaster Charles - assuming you don't use the car for commuting and have a limited mileage policy it should come out cheaper than your current renewal.

I've been with Lancaster for about 7 years now and so far, they've come out cheaper than others. That said, occasionally one place or another has come close but for the price difference, not worth the aggro of swapping.
Cheers,
Dave

The thing is I'm using the Coupe for commuting these days since starting new work in January.
I drive 10 mins to work (4.5 miles each way).
I think its good the car is getting regular use again, keeping things ticketi-boo.

Though I'll still see what Lancaster can offer me..

This is on hold for the time being with having bought the Corsa.

Though that could change if I sell the Jeep.

I'm just wondering on the basis this plan went ahead, if there would be enough numbers of people to see this get off the ground.
I'm sure most other 800 owners will use faceache for their car needs, considering the forum is being less contributed to (even if there appears to be more new forum members)
I guess convincing those on social media of group insurance is do-able, but possibly somewhat challenging.

Usually if you use a classic for commuting, Lancaster view it as a "daily" and don't give the best prices. Because they "specialise" in classics, they have better prices/Ts & Cs for classics but not for daily use cars.

I don't know if they give an option for "occasional commuting", i think they should as most moderns aren't as reliable as a well-maintained classic so the classic is a good fall-back/emergency use for work car.

Picked up some more wheels for the Sterling the other day, bit of a long journey using 6 gallons of fuel for the round trip and the amount of "moderns" i saw by the side of the road, broken down was amazing.
The only one i did have a bit of sympathy for was (strangely) a BMW driver who had a puncture and the tyre was almost completely off the rim. He was out of the car on his phone, presumably calling either a mobile tyre service or for someone to bring him a spare wheel.
Other than that they were predominantly VAG and French cars (or French derived as in Vauxhalls) with the occasional Merc, Porsche and BMW thrown in for good measure.
Cheers,
Dave

That's made me had a thought.
Is it possible that there are those insurers that base their premium on the likelihood of a particular make/model of car/van breaking down and subsequently causing the possibility of an accident, say on the motorway?

A couple of weeks ago I saw a 10 year old VW CC broken down in slow moving traffic exiting a roundabout.
The middle aged looking driver was checking under the bonnet.
Certain VW models like the CC and the Pheaton are perceived to be the best of German engineered, whereas undoubtedly also known to be the least reliable at the same time..which is very odd indeed.
I'm yet to be convinced that VWs (as a whole) are reliable as claimed to be, particularly after dieselgate.
And I wonder how dieselgate, could have impacted insurance for UK motorists..but I digress.

This morning I got an email from GoGirl insurance about my (non auto) renewal.

For this renewal, the price to pay is £331.52; up from last years £288.96.

I've made no claims at all in the year or had no penalty points.

Naturally I thought its time I shopped around.
I went on to confused.com. Cheapest quote was more expensive than GoGirl.

Then I went on comparethemarket. Cheapest quote was from.....err...... GoGirl, except this quote was £50 over the £331.52 that Gogirl themselves directly quoted.

So.. I thought, well maybe its time to try a classic insurer.
Footman James came to mind. I visited their website to get a quote. Went through all 'the spiel' got to the end page where I was told 'online quote price not available'.

Anyway, there was a generic quote number to go off for this.

I called up Footman James gave the quote number, went through a few more details.

The price that came back for comprehensive cover; - social, domestic and commuting (based on any agreed valuation)....

....£415

Bearing in mind I haven't got cheaper than £331.52 the level of cover for £415 is quite the same except for the major advantage of the agreed valuation.
This price is quite comparable to the quotes on the comparison websites. In fact this price from Footman James is cheaper than Admiral Insurance who I was with before GoGirl.

Since my renewal isn't within 30 days, I'm just going to leave doing anything for a few days.

Gladly open to any thoughts on here in the meantime.
