I have been working on the front sub frame again last week! Except this time it is the one nearest the front bumper. It is rotten and will need replacing. I cleaned it with a wire brush, but I have found too many holes, and for MOT legal reasons - sub frames cannot be welded.

Fortunately though, I can still get hold of this part from someone in the know.

I'm in the 'process' of finding a replacement sub frame. In the meanwhile this week, my intention is to fit a brand new OE spec rear brake disk brake cover (which I painted a while ago with Hamerite (or however its spelt) smooth black paint.
This is ready to fit along with some other trinkerty new bits.

Some time ago I bought an original Mk1a small type front bumper off Mathew (a forum member here). This is something else I need to replace on my car. I had a very minor traffic accident, back in 2009 whilst driving the car to college. (I repaired the car inner bumper at college during my Level 1 automotive body and paint repair course) Though it took me some time to get round to sourcing the correct type bumper (non foglamp model), which now thankfully I have had in the summer house for about 4 years. I have moved it into storage with the car in a much drier area, along with the brand new rear body panels for the Mk1 fastback. (These have been unavailable new for about 10 years now)

Took me a while to workout how to upload the photo as the Photobucket website seems to be down so instead uploaded with the app on my phone! Anyway this is an old photo but the car which we still have is largely still the same. Didn't get round to some of the jobs I intended to do earlier this year, but should hopefully do so before another year comes around;- the car is still a work in progress..

Well apart from giving the thing a wash yesterday (8/08/17) no updates. I would like to get the rear wings sorted, but will need to save up first. I have the panels ready and waiting.

I've not spoken about the updates for this car for a while now.
Work on this has been going on behind the scenes and it's never a forgotten project.
As some might have read, I replaced the battery in the Mk2 coupe, thinking that Vauxhall trade battery was a dude.
It turned out that wasn't the case. However the garage I bought that battery from replaced it free of charge.

So good news is I have x2 new batteries!

The varta one in the coupe, and this recently replaced Vauxhall trade battery has gone into this blue fastback.

Yesterday I gave the car and oil and filter change.

Had abit of a run and the car washed.

I mentioned some time ago about the subframes. The rear sub, I had replaced with a Rimmers obtained part.

Still work to be done on the front subframe..and the rear quarter panel (I have new panels to have welded in)

Sounds like all good stuff Charles! Have you got a new/good secondhand replacement front subframe to fit?
Cheers,
Dave

Looked for one before without any joy. To be honest the original metal isn't too bad that it is beyond repair - few pin holes that could be filled in
It doesn't need welding but I know subframes can't be welded for mot purposes - or that was the case at one time?
There was no question that the other subframe had to be replaced. Totally rotten in places with huge chunks of metel missing. How it passed an MOT like that on more than one occasion is beyond belief.

It was only when I noticed how bad this appeared in 2013 that I had to do something.
Was very lucky that rimmers were selling these off at the time for 75quid!
Think they were originally £600 to buy

As far as i'm aware, subframes still can't be welded for the MoT, i'm not sure if they'd class it as a subframe or a crossmember though - i think (but not sure) cross members can be welded as can the longtitudinal beam.
However it's debatable as those three components form a sub-frame so i guess it depends how it's all interpreted.
Cheers,
Dave

I would need to find a substitute to welding, in order to have these holes rectified.
In the old days where body repairs were done, lead filler was used.
Using this lead work isn't possible in the UK for health reasons.
There must be some alternatives and filling methods..

Lead loading is still done in the UK Charles :

http://www.creedandshoremotorworks.com/

However lead loading isn't structural so really it's a bodge to make it look good for the tester.

My argument has always been that as long as the welding is performed to a good standard it should be as strong if not stronger than the original but i think too many people "pigeon-pooped" plates onto subframes that later failed because the welds were substandard and/or the metal used was substandard.

I remember having to weld a chassis section on a car once and it was something like 1.6mm which i didn't have. I did however have 0.9mm so welded two patches on to give 1.8mm. The tester commented it wasn't thick enough at first then realised i'd done a double thickness and also plug-welded through some tactically drilled holes in the outer plate as well as seam-welding each patch and then aadded that as i'd used double thickness and taken extra measures to strengthen it, it was more than enough and would probably outlast the car!
Cheers,
Dave
