Thanks Dave! I’m not sure I agree but I take your Word for it! :D :D

But when the rest is cleaned up, removing grit, leaves, dead and alive Spiders and the odd mouse it might look ok!

If you work out the improvements you've made on the bits you've done, the potential for improving other areas easily and the general overall condition of the car (notwithstanding any tinworm hiding underneath), i'd actually say overall it's looking great.
Removed some dead leaves from my Volvo today, stopped the heater blowing fumey air into the cabin!
Cheers,
Dave

Hey, what’s up in Sweden?

Absolutely nothing is the answer. I have been waiting for the gasket for my new thermostat for a week now. The Swedish Mail is notorious for being slow, and today -friday- I really hoped it would arrive. But no. And on monday I start a new job so probably will be wasted next week anyway.

Good side: I managed to get a 5litre can of 98 octane into the tank today. Tank was almost dried out so it was welcome.

Battery is charged, alternator fitted. Just want that gasket to arrive!

All systems go on arrival of the 'stat gasket! Can't be bad but could be better with the gasket! :D

On the right hand drive cars with a switched fan, the resistor is underneath the fan/heater housing if memory serves. I'm guessing they simply did a mirror image for the LHD cars so if you remove the trim under the glovebox and look up, you'll probably see the resistor pack or at least the piece of plastic it's mounted on.Usually held in by 2 or 3 screws, a centrally (ish) mounted plug to disconnect and the screws to remove and it's out. YOu'll probably find a common connection has broken. Should be able to either re-crimp or solder it. :D
This is of interest Dave. Any guidelines?

If the headlamps have stopped working again Henrik repeat whatever you did last time to get them working - good chance they're suffering lack of use.

As for guidelines for hunting down the blower resistors, only what i've already said i'm afraid. My last Mk1 was 17 ish years ago (apart from some i've broken and those came to me with some bits missing anyway) and the one i had to play with the blower resistors was even longer ago, can't remember when but 21+ years.
Can't really remember much else at the moment, it's fairly simple to find from what i remember though.
Cheers,
Dave

I got it out, took it apart and resoldered it. I’ll test tomorrow if it helped. :)

Not sure if that is good or bad Dave? :D But I take it I cant use one from a Mk2 then.

I read online that they are sturdy and seldom fail so the slider would be the thing to explore if this doesnt fix it!

What you read online is correct Henrik, they are very sturdy and although i haven't delved into the exact nature of them i can see enough to know the slider pot puts a variable voltage on the transistor which then switches a variable current through the motor. That's it in rough terms anyway.

I think i have one of those floating around if it doesn't work and the slider pot is ok - i may even have a spare slider pot but i'd have to dig it out and check.

If you have one from a Mk2 and it looks EXACTLY the same, you shold be ok to use it! :D

Dave

Unfortunately the soldering did nothing. Only high speed fan, always on.

Next idea is to make some kind of test to the potentiometer slider. In my world there should be a wire going out from the slider that is adjustable from 0-12v as the slider is pushed. But what wire?

Another Idea is to remove the slider potentiometer and test that. But how?

As of now it’s ok. The fan works which is a lot better than a dead fan. But it would be nice if it worked properly.

Do you have a multimeter Henrik? If so, use it on the resistance/Ohms range to check you have resistance from one end of the track that the slider moves along and then check that the resistance varies when you slide it by leaving one probe on one end of the track and the other on the terminal connected to the slider. It might be the transistor has gone short circuit in which case the fan would be on permanently with no speed control.

See how you get on checking the pot out and if you have no joy, i'll explain how to test the transistor with your multimeter. :D

Dave
