Re: 1993 Rover 827 Si automatic
It has been a while sinds i worked on the 827 Si of my father. In the past i worked on his scuttle plannel but it started to rust again. It bothered me so work started!:
I took it to my work and removed the rust thoroughly this time:
Some holes were present:
I decided to weld them but i was concerned about the heat in the panel. A colleague advised me to use plates at the back to have some meat to work with:
After i carefully welded the holes shut and using the air gun to cool everything down i managed it!!
Looks ok i think!:
The rear. I grinded of the edges of the plates to make it look better:
Then i let the rust preventive primer seep in the seems:
Then the finish. I applied a thin layer of filler on the welding spots:
And to even it all out a colleague applied sanding filler that i sanded with 320 grit and 500 grit:
Then, satin black on the front and rear:
And then another colleague applied 2k clear coat on the front and rear of the panel to give it a nice finish and protection:
The rubber strip was stuck on and i let some clear cavity wax run in all the seems.
Quite happy with the result! I think my father is happy.

More excellent work Marc! What's next, building a scuttle panel from scratch? You might have a few orders if so!

Re: 1993 Rover 827 Si automatic
My father's 827 Si achieved MOT after the rear sillencer was replaced. I had one laying around from when i had a stainless steel one installed. So my father was helped. Now there were still some jobs i wanted to do on this Rover but i needed a lift for them. I picked up the Si and started work. First i cleaned the car with wax removing soap. Then removed the wheels, cleaned them and cleaned the underside of the car and the wheel wells:
After the bottom was clean i placed some heaters to make the bottom dry fast so i could apply cavity wax:
In the meantime i started on the next job. In the past, my friend and me welded a new piece of steel in the rear part of both sills. But the wheel arch from sill to strip needed de-rusting as well. Both sides looked like this:
De-rusted both sides:
Applied rust preventive primer (red) and sill coating (grey) to make the structure nicer:
Then normal primer so the colour could stick properly:
High gloss black:
2K clear coat:
What we also noticed was the rear ROVER badge was not alligned properly so i removed it and i will re-install it in the next few days:
Every thing clean, cavity waxed all and coated the exhaust with zinc. I also greased the hubs so that when the wheels need to come of it will be easy:
I also polished the roof and boot lid and the next day i washed the Rover again with wax removing soap:
Then i applied a fresh coat of wax to the bodywork.
What i also tried to do is the steering wheel. It started to look tatty. I choose some dy that looked spot on in comparisson with the leather of the seats. I even put it on paper and hold it next to the wheel. It looked fine but it turned out to light. One finds out when it is to late to back of. Anyway, the leather is preserved, it looks fresh and if my father decides he wants it to match better, i will do it and it is an easy job. Its smooth but it could be better:
Looks nice i think:
Scuttle pannel in place:
Picture time:
I hope my father is pleased!!

Re: 1993 Rover 827 Si automatic
He certainly should be pleased Marc, you've done a cracking job on that! In my experience of using leather dye (not much admittedly) i've found that at first it tends to be brighter than the final result after a few weeks. What you may have to do if there's a definite difference in colour is do the rest of the cabin with one coat of the dye, just to "lift" the colour everywhere else to match. Of course if any bits are worn then you'll have to do more than one coat on those bits but do those as "local" repairs then give the whole thing a coat if you get my meaning.
With most leather dyes, you can also use them on plastics meaning you can do the steering column cowl and any other plastic parts.

Thanks Dave! Yes we will have to wait and see what the future brings. Hey that is also a good idea! Dye the rest to blend it in. Thanks!!scoobyh123 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 11:14 amHe certainly should be pleased Marc, you've done a cracking job on that!
