Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Yes I will be interesting to see how harsh it is and how much vibration is transmitted. If not to bad then will do something similar at the front to remove the rubber bushes at the top mount but without the camber adjuster slots.

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Given the main reason for rear wheels on an 800 is to stop the back end scraping the tarmac, you might find it unexpectedly harsher - likewise at the front as the front is naturally stiffer than the rear anyway. The vibration might be just too much.
Might also be the case you notice very little difference on the back end as they're not that well insulated from the road to start with anyway. but it might tighten up the turning on bends losing that little bit of compliance.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
It is so noisy already a bit more discomfort should be ok, it makes me grin when I first drive it each time it comes out for the summer.
Gear box mount bushed, bolted
and fitted
Rear suspension toe adjuster bolts were seized, could only turn them with a breaker bar so been soaking them with penetrating oil for weeks and finally got round to removing them, I bought new replacements but was able to clean up the originals and reuse them.
Greased and refitted, they now turn freely and adjusts with a spanner
The front suspension top mounts look a bit scruffy and been niggling me for ages so removed the shock and spring assembly. Pictures are a bit out of sync as I forgot to get pictures as I went along.
Started cleaning up the top mounts, not sure I should have pushed out the studs as they were kind of welded in, it makes cleaning much easier though, will tack or glue them back for refitting.

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I had to free off the adjusters on my Coupe a few years ago Jim (tracking adjusters on rear trailing arms) so i did it using electrolytic derusting. Removed and copper greased the eccentric adjusters then gave the arma a coat of paint after.
Whatever works really!

Once set on the production line those adjusters are forgotten.
I hope to get all the basic geometry settings back to factory spec.

You'er not wrong Jim, many so-called alignment specialists don't believe the rear alignment is adjustable on 800s and don't like admitting they're wrong.820Vitesse wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 9:50 pmOnce set on the production line those adjusters are forgotten.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Couple of small but satisfying jobs to update.
The steering wheel horn push roundal is fitted to complete the new steering wheel
Fuel filler pipe is pretty much ready to go back on once I de rust the area it sits in, a job I have been putting off because it is going to be so awkward to get to.
I polished some steel shock absorber washers for zinc plating as bit of an experiment to see how they look rather than the usual sand blasted finish. Quite pleased as they have a gold and blue tint to them now.
Polished steel
Yellow zinc plated
my late Christmas present turned up this week. I went for this as it is similar to the standard exhaust in that it is twin straight tailpipes, just a bit bigger than original, really nicely made it is by Vibrant

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
More great stuff there Jim! Polishing is always recommended over sandblasting on items to be plated for a high shine finish. Needs degreased/de-smutted before plating to make sure it's clean but i expect your platers do that or you do if you plate them yourself?
Nice job on the steering wheel, was that one of the sources i suggested?
Like the exhaust, what's the inlet bore on it?

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Aftermarket exhausts are something that I've not had a lot of luck with. Had a couple of custom ones made locally and even a Powerflow (wouldn't again) but they noisy with a different note, as you'd expect stainless to be. Seems even worse on the KV6, particularly around two and quarter thousand revs, really boomy. Took it off the Sterling and adapted it to the Vitesse, which was better but even then I've had to put a couple of modified decibel reducers in the tailpipes.
Is there a UK supplier of this system? And everytime I've asked about a custom exhaust, they always want to build it on the car; how did you manage?

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Apologies for late replies.
Yes Dave they are from your link. The logo image is good quality but the gel part seems a bit soft, I assume this is because they are meant to be for wheel centre caps and flexible to stick to a domed cap. It already has fine swirl scratches from handling and wiping with a soft cloth, it might not matter and time will tell. Certainly looks better with it.
Dave, Mark, the tailbox is 3" inlet with 2 x 3.5" tailpipes. It is universal so will require adapting to my system.
I had a Mongoose exhaust on this car for years it was really well made and had a nice sound, sold it recently. I had a quick look on their website but it is no longer listed, you could contact them. Otherwise there are lots of places making custom exhausts but it depends on the man making it as to quality and fit.

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I'd hazard a guess if the vinyl is soft on the badge Jim that it is self-healing so those minor scratches may well disappear soon. Be interesting to see if that is the case.
Sadly that tailbox has too large an inlet for my beastie, being the Honda V6 it's sensitive on the exhaust size because it's a complete tuned length from the N/S front wing where the rsonator is all the way through the variable length inlet to the end of the tail pipes.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Thanks Marc, sadly it looks like the world will be taking a year off from large gatherings while this virus is going round. No car shows or gatherings. We have to adapt and use the time do more work on our cars and hope we all come through ok.
So some updates
Front suspension is reassembled with the zinc plated washers, painted top mounts and new Powerflex bushes
Before
The fuel tank is out at last, exterior condition is not to bad just some surface rust on initial inspection.
The main fuel pipe connector between tank and pipe to engine bay is corroded solid, fortunately the tank still comes out with it connected
and made a bracket for the tailbox mount using a strip of stainless steel bent to the silencer body shape

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Try soaking that corroded union in 50/50 acetone/Calube ATF-U Jim. Mix it up and give it a good shake first then brush it on. Seal whatever you mix it in to prevent the acetone evaporating and shake each time before use. You'll be surprised how good it is!
Other than that, even more fantastic work there!

Thanks for the tip Dave, it might still come undone with conventional methods, if brute force fails then Ill give it a try.
