You are right i am afraid. Not many meetings this year. But remember; every cloud has a silver lining. Meanwhile we can enjoy your work!

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I think the time has come when whatever we do on our cars needs to go on the forum, just to give others a bit of inspiration and encouragement. I know we usually do but some things are missed out.
Perhaps leave pictures of changing a bulb or the oil out but plenty of words and pictures to sustain ourselves and others!

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Agreed, we must keep busy and what better way than maintaining our Rovers.
So here is a rusty update. The seized fuel pipe union would not come apart while attached to the car so I had to remove the tank to engine bay metal pipes, 3 pipes that run the length of the car to engine bay fuel filter, fuel rail return and to where the charcoal canister used to be.
Once in the vice I was able to crack the union apart easily.
Bit if a clean to check condition and they look fine, I will try to get two rubber hose sections on this pipe replaced.
The tank metal breather/vent pipe assembly cleaned up ok and is currently getting a coat of Hydrate80
Made fuel pump and sender blanking plates for when I clean and treat the tank interior
This vent is proving tricky to remove without damaging the bracket, may have to grind the nut and stud off.
Not much on this car still has the original electronic systems but for the air bag reset I dug out the old Rover Microcheck again to reset the SRS while I mess about finding the correct resister for the light.

Try some acetone/ATF 50/50 mix on those vent bolts Jim!

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Seeing as the centre isn't threaded, how much do you think these can take with a breaker bar? I've freed off the bottom nut, and been giving regular doses of penetrating oil - and yes, also 50/50 acetone/ATF - but the bolt remains stubborn.820Vitesse wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 11:56 am
Rear suspension toe adjuster bolts were seized, could only turn them with a breaker bar so been soaking them with penetrating oil for weeks and finally got round to removing them, I bought new replacements but was able to clean up the originals and reuse them.
....
...
I've not been brave enough to swing on it yet - 15mm didn't feel sturdy enough - but I can see they are pretty substantial!
I think my right rear is out of alignment (seem to be wearing a step on the tyre)

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I freed mine off using electrolytic derusting and WMP Adrian, followed by a 15mm impact socket on my 12v impact wrench, first one way then the other and back again repeatedly until it eventually freed itself off.
Once out i polished the eccentric adjuster and the hole it goes in, degreased/cleaned the polish out in case of any abrasion problems and then smeared copper grease on the adjusters before refitting.
They will take a fair bit of punishment but be careful not to drag the car off the axle stands!

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I assume the a lot of difficult comes from the fact that any movement is also part of the adjustment, so I'm not purely trying to free off a rusted bolt - the whole joint will be fused together.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I think it is mainly the bolt seized in the arm, crack the rear bolt loose too to help the arm sections move. It took a lot of force, one foot in the wheel arch for leverage and a 24" breaker bar, once it had initially broken the grip it still had to be soaked with penetrating fluid for a couple of days, more turning with the bar then it could be knocked through.

When you say 'crack the rear bolt', which bolt do you mean? Thanks for the reassurance820Vitesse wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 12:52 pmI think it is mainly the bolt seized in the arm, crack the rear bolt loose too to help the arm sections move. Nice video Jim - liked the bit where you passed that Porsche!820Vitesse wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 12:57 pmI found some old video clips so cobbled together a short video
If you look at the rear arm Adrian, there is the seized adjuster bolt and about 2" back from it, going through the adjuster bracket which is a sort of "U" profile and the trailing arm is another bolt. This allows the adjuster to pivot on the trailing arm during adjustment and helps lock the bracket in position on the arm once adjustment is complete. The rear bolt is within the "footprint" of the bracket so shouldn't be too difficult to find.mercedade wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:09 amWhen you say 'crack the rear bolt', which bolt do you mean? As above, its easy to find its the only other nut and bolt on the arm, same size at the rear end of the arm

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Cheers Dave, the Porsche driver seemed completely unaware of other cars on track and the Alfa that blew fluid all over the track also seemed completely unaware of what happened, marshals missed it too, at that point I decided it is a good time to let the car cool down.
