Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
If the signal wires to the relay go low (0V or earth) when active, you can link from the relay to the new switch(es) with the other side of the switches going to earth Adrian.
I'm assuming there is a permanent (perhaps ignition switched) +12V feed to the other side of the relay coils so that would make sense.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Well, no dice so far.
As I've made it, the switch in the rad goes to ground on one side, and to the relay on the other.
The relay itself is wired to drive the fan directly (from what I can see) - so that it has a 12v switched supply to trigger it (designed to switch, I assume, when the ECU signal is received), and a permanent 12v feed that is completed when the relay activates.
But now, having replaced the wired from the ECU (i assume) with one from the rad switch, nothing happens, even when it gets hot.
Any way of testing the rad switch that won't involve draining all my coolant?

Where is the temperature gauge sitting Adrian?

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
8 o'clock normally. The highest I dare let it go was 9 o'clock, but no fan came on at that point, so put the blowers on full and cooled it down.
In my green Vitesse, the fan would have been on long before then.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
What about if you link the rad switch out? If it comes on then it's the switch, if it doesn't, it's probably the relay which might have been the problem all long.
I'll try and have a look at the diagram for the late Mk2 and see if i can work out what's happening if there's anything odd on the later cars.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
I think as I've mentioned before the previous owner of my Vitesse installed a switched fan. I removed it and replaced the relay behind the driver headlight with a new one. That solved my problem but I assume there is another issue with yours? Personally, I couldn't understand why he went to all the trouble of installing a switched fan when it was a simple fix. If that had failed, I was looking at one of those aftermarket jobs where you fit another sensor in one of the water pipes. Essentially I didn't trust myself to remember to turn the fan on!

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Thanks both - I've tested the relay by applying 12v to it and getting a hefty click, but you're right, I've not actually tried it in situ in its harness. Will do it tomorrow.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
OK, so I'm going to go shopping for a new one.
What kind of temperature switch should I be looking for? I'm hoping that a standard "Rover 820" will fit, even though the rad is for the earlier Vitesse so smaller than a normal 820.
James, the PO, had to improvise at the time, so I don't actually know what was fitted.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
The standard 820 switch should fit Adrian, the 'stat is 88C so you'd need something like a 97-92C switch - comes on at 97C and switches off at 92C. You don't want it coming on at 88C or as soon as the 'stat opens, the fan will be running so will impair the battery charging and also overcool the engine.
The 97-92C is usually the lower of the two switches, if memory serves the higher one is 102-97C. If you can find one (perhaps for a late classic Mini 1.3i or an XJ40), a 92-87C switch might be better but very tight on the margins so you might find the fan runs constantly once up to temperature or is constantly cycling on/off even under little or no load.
I mentioned the Mini 1.3i and the Jag XJ40, they use the same seals for the switch but in different colour PU and are priced differently from Rimmers - about a fiver for the Mini one, £6 ish for the Rover one or about £16 to have it in a Jaguar box! Three different part numbers and colours for the same part!
Other places will have different pricing of course but depends what you can find.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Thanks Dave - that info may explain a bit more than you realise as well.
From a quick ebay, most Rover 820 switches are listed around 110 degrees - so if James bought one just because it plugged the hole, rather than because it needed to work, it may be that I've been waiting for the car to get hotter than I'll ever be comfortable with. If I'd left it, would it have worked..... (I'm not going to try!)
But this looks good:

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
That one does look right Adrian - i also had a thought, when i said from memory 102-97C, i think i was thinking of the 827 high temp switch - the standard 'stat on the 827 is a tepid 78C which is only 4C above what the EAT ECU needs to see to bring the torque converter lock-up in!
As such i have an 82C 'stat in mine, keep hunting for that elusive "Nordic" 'stat which is 88C or 92C, can't remember which.
I think you may have hit the nail on the head - James bought a 110-105C switch or similar so wouldn't have come on until it was a lot hotter than you were happy with.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Excellent, thanks Dave.
Now please forgive the idiot question - but every rad switch I've ever replaced has been threaded. How are these held in position?

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Differently!
Joking aside, it depends on the rad, there are two methods, first is a bayonet system like a light bulb but instead of pins on the bulb base, it's a lock ring with two "legs" that do what the pins on a light bulb do.
Second there's a channel around the outside of where the switch mounts and a squared off C shape clip that slides in from the open end of that channel to keep the switch in.
Really depends which radiator you have.
